Learning Polish - need courses or books !!!

Hi could anyone recommend any courses or books i should buy to learn the polish language, I am planning on moving to Poznan with my Polish girlfriend in around 6 weeks and i would love to be able to learn as much of the language as i can before i move there.

I have a dictionary but everything looks so confusing at the moment and i just dont know where to start.

I just got this book called "Polish in 4 weeks" it has a cdrom and a cd. It's very good ,and leads you gradually into the polish laguage with understandable grammar lessons.
I recommend this book :)

It sounds like a quick phrasebook or travelbook is what you're looking for, and you have a good recommendation already, but later on, if you're interested in a more traditional, detailed study, I recommend:

"Teach Yourself Polish" by M. Corbridge-Patkaniowska. Published 1967 by The English Universities Press.

Unless the language has changed significantly since '67, it should be very helpful. I'm a slow learner, but it seems to be helping me. :) My library had it, so there was no cost to read it. A good book, I think.

Or try 'Colloquial Polish' by Bolesław W. Mazur, published by Routledge.

I have not tried any other books yet, so I have little to compare it to, but it's certainly a quicker way to make progress than scavenging around on the internet. And it's helped me make steady progress over the last few weeks. The author manages to present the complex grammar in a clear way without dumbing anything down, and there's plenty of vocab too.

Yes, a very good book but who said anything about 1967? I have a copy of the book and it was written oringanally during the war years! But I agree, a thorough book.

Another very good book and I have a new one with the cassette which cost me £1.50 at the A3 car boot some time ago. Again, this book has been rewritten and there is a new version out now but I have never worked through it to see how it compares with his original good version.

Lightbulb is right (except for the year; mine was published in 1957 and 1964), if it wasn't for TYP by M. Corbridge-Patkaniowska, I'd have no prayer of figuring out the grammar of polish - it's VERY complicated and COMPLETELY different than English.

If you should graduate from that book, you can download Polish Grammar in a Nutshell by Oscar E. Swan just by typing the title in your web browser instead of a URL. It should find the download and prompt you.

Oops - I meant it was published first published in 1948 and again in 1960,1964 and yet again in 1970. Hope that helps you track down a copy!

Hi,

If you will move to Poznan, you should try to go to the Adam Miesckieviz University. There is polish course for foreigners. You do not need to be student of the university. It is quite cheap.

I went last year and it was funny, there was a lot of Erasmus. Also it is a way to know non-polish people.
