I used to live near Katowice,but I don't think that it's nice place to visit ;-)It's quite big grey town,there is nothing special to see.
Go to Krakow,Zakopane,( not so far from Katowice) those are much nicer places than Katowice.

I like Katowice=) Nice pubs,clubs,restaurants...it's close to Oświęcim....really nice people there, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

I lived in Katowice for two years. There is pretty much nothing there. It's just a city with no real center. The surrounding areas are full of factories, power plants and coal plants. So to put it nicely the air is a little heavy. Sites of Katowice include "Spodek" which can best be described as a huge spaceship that crashed into earth. It's actually a sports arena. There is also a huge statue across from Spodek that looks like a two wings of a bird missing the body. Honestly Katowice sucks. I would not plan anything for more than a day there. If your flying into Katowice your going to have a little bus ride from the airport even to get this city. That will take you about an hour. I would then go straight to the train station and buy a ticket out of there.

If you must stay, there are a few decent clubs there, not sure about the whole gay scene, but I did live next to a "bath house", which from what I was told was a gay hangout. Prices in Katowice are a bit cheaper than Krakow or Zakopane, so if the budget is of importance than Katowice would be better. There are some surrounding smaller cities like Gliwice, Chorzow and Sosnowiec. Really nothing much there either, except Gliwice which is a bit nicer with a smaller town feel.

Krakow is about an 1h 30 minutes from Katowice. Zakopane takes a bit longer to get to by train as PKP is not exactly the best system in the world. I think it can take somewhere around 5 or 6 hours to get there. In all honesty you can hop a train from Katowice and get to Prague in about the same time. Anways that's my thoughts on the matter.
