Funeral arrangements for a foreigner in Poland

Can a foreigner purchase a cremation or funeral ahead of time in Warsaw along with some legal will saying you want to have your remains stay there? So that if you did pass away there you could be interred there instead of a big repatriation hassle? Or if you died there would they try to send you home via the embassy etc?

I assume cremation is the cheapest option. If you aren't religious or really care can you just have your remains disposed of?

not sure about the costs but not popular in Poland

originally reserved for the Pagans hence not a Christian way of being sent to make one's maker

I attended a service at a Polish crematorium, I should have filmed it

the coffin was sliding away on a conveyor belt and the attendant was banging on the window to get everyone's attention to look
at the coffin

he then started waving a dirty handkerchief at it to wish it bon voyage

meanwhile all the dead girl's family were sobbing and wailing

just incredible

cremeation is not the cheapest thing - my guess cremation costs around 2000 PLN (there are not many cremation facilities and this drives the price up) - cremated remains used to be obligatory put in cemetery (interred or otherwise) before - but now the family can keep the ashes (and keep them at home for example but also dispose of them according to the will of the deceased) - now I have no idea who can you make responsible for disposing of the ashes if you don't want to bring your family here

course they would not, do not flatter yourself.
Repatriation of a body is a very expensive business, it would only be done if your family requested and paid for it, otherwise it would be a pauper's cremation for you..;)

I knew an Irish chap who passed away in Bangkok, his family paid over £30,000 for his body to be returned, I couldn't understand the waste of money myself. I mean they could have zipped him in a body bag and put him on a budget flight (jokes) But for a normal family, that kind of cost could ruin them...

Seriously though, that is why organized people have insurance, or as you suggest, make your own arrangements/requests beforehand.

even after you die the ******* still want their slice.

Why dont you just do nothing and let the powers that be worry about the after arrangements? you concerned about your relatives footing the bill i suppose...

Or just sign it over to a medical school. They pay for a memorial service and you help the next generation of doctors learn.

the irony would be that chances are you would then get sliced up by a medical student attending the English language course.
It is common knowledge that they get the freshest stiffs

close to your death, you might want to assist them by writing words such as 'leg' on your lower limbs :-)

i don't know about everyone else but it was the cheapest option for us. I don't like the idea of bodies taking up space after life has left them so we went with that. Good idea though, I mean choosing now what you'd like done so others don't mull or argue over it.

I am not sure what you do

if you were a PF member you could send me a personal mail and we could correspond

Does anyone have any actual government rules regarding this? I see lots of opinions but no facts. It stands to reason if you have no local family or arrangements made that they would contact your embassy and try to find family. But if you don't want that to happen...if you want to be "dealt with" in Warsaw how do you go about it? Some places just cremate and dispose of unclaimed remains...that would be easiest. But as an option again does anyone know about having prepaid arrangements with a funeral home in the city?

I don't see what's the problem and I would guess that if the family abroad don't want the body a one's country embassy would simply pay for a burial or cremation in Poland or even if not the Poles would take care of you because I doubt they would just dump you on a dump.In this case you don't really have to do anything but I am sure that you can pre pay and be taken care of according to your wishes.

Just go and see a laywer and put it all in a will, pay the man and job done.

we are terribly sorry but what were you expecting?

I do not have any departed relatives that I need disposing of on the cheap
I doubt that anyone else is in the same boat either

please forgive us for our lack of encyclopaedic knowledge on the subject of pauper's graves

perhaps you might want to contact your embassy and ask them?

one thing is for sure if the embassy gets involved and starts shipping stiffs across borders, someone is going to get a very hefty bill

there is always the budget approach involving duct tape, a length of carpet and a lay-by

perhaps leaving the dearly departed on a park bench to be dealt with by squirrels and passing crows

How about a link to the regulations? How about knowledge of the funeral logistics in Warsaw?

All the snarky ******* replies are not helpful. I guess if you want to complain and moan about Pakistanis or something this is your place....if you want real info from people who ******* live there and know the society then you are screwed.

Pardon me for hoping someone would have useful info instead of post after post of stupid jokes and bullshit.

you seem to have real anger issues with women
and I myself have a low opinion of men who bully women

you are also a fool

As you did not mention for whom you needed the plot, I can only hope that it is for you

I dunno man- I was reading the replies myself and thought "what pointless bullsh*t to be writing on serious thread. why don't these people just write nothing?"

Because most of them enjoy seeing their own imagined "clever" words rather than saying anything substantial. Like a lot of people these days they make it about THEM instead of helping or just staying out of it. And when you get angry at their nonsense they again turn it around and act like YOU are the issue. Typical passive aggressive nonsense and it is very transparent.

It's become clear this forum is more of a place for such people to "hear themselves speak" as it where rather than actually provide help and info.

I checked crematoria prices and they are much cheaper than I believed - its mostly less than 700 PLN for the cremation - but as for aranging things I'm not really sure how you should do it mostly because I have no idea how your ashes could(or should) be dealt with in a legal manner - anyway go and see a lawyer - paying him/her upfront so that he/she could arrange things after your departure is the most logical way (if it is at all possible)

find a forum that isnt, most of us like the sound of our own voices, its human nature.

With regard to your dilemma see a lawyer.

you are the most blatantly aggressive poster I have ever seen here. You clearly have a problem. It's a public forum, not a helpline or information service for people who are too dumb to help themselves. Get a life.

^he's right in some ways, y'know.
Take your reply for instance, he never went out of his way to address you, he merely vented his frustration at the lack of constructive feedback he got compared to the nattering tit-headed comments. Then, you go out of your way to insult him- pretty much fitting the profile of his source of frustration. He asked a question and if you don't have anything constructive to contribute then I too would have to wonder exactly who needs to get a life.

that is all.

OK but I did contribute something constructive, (if you were to look back,) and so did other posters, and all he did was complain.
My next suggestion that he find the appropriate office may have been a little cocky, but anyone who would find the need to reply like this;

'Yeah just "go and find it" you stupid wh*re. Clearly you don't know what office it is or you could have said it...you would much rather be a snarky c*nt. F*ck Off.'

obviously does have some kind of communication problem and does need to get a life. Unless you too think that is normal?
Then you tell me that I insulted him? Oh dear....
