So I got a job teaching English in Katowice and I have saved $3000CAD initially. Is that enough to get a start there?

@Davey: what kind of job is it that you need to bring your savings? ;). Normally we expect to have a salary covering our expenses ;)

@Davey: if you need furniture, go to Ikea's. I don't know if you have it in North America, it's a Swedish store very popular also in Poland. I have bought some furniture and I regularly buy a lot of things for my flat (I like to go there and also to their restaurant, unbelievably cheap with some of the best cakes I've ever eaten in Warsaw ;)). Also to buy cheap furniture, you can go to Black Red White and to Agata (about same prices as Ikea but less choice). Of course the quality is not great and it won't last for several generations but it does not matter.

for example; you can buy a bed + mattress for 1,000 ZL at Ikea's. Last fall, I bought a great mattress for some 500 ZL.

Yes, IKEA has outlets in the US. Same crappy furniture as in Europe... :)

sure, it's not good quality but I heard that in Poland it's the number 1 store for furniture. I often go there and believe me, it's crowded.

Ikea is for design, not necessery quality.
People nowadays don't want to buy furniture for 100years, those will be out of style/boring as *** in 10 years so it's better to buy cheap and change.

IKEA has really cracked its market. Sure, if you are a prosperous middle-aged couple furnishing your upmarket home, you'll go for solid wood, but for young people on a budget IKEA sells the most stylish of the cheap MDF furniture available. (Just keep the kids away from their Malm range.)

Yes, exactly. I'm fond of IKEA because I can change it frequently and easily. The thought of buying solid wood furniture (or worse, that bloody second hand Dutch furniture!) fills me with horror - it's bulky, it doesn't look nice and it screams of something that my grandma would buy.

Back to the topic please, this is not a discussion about IKEA

Davey, when does your contract start? Is the school sorting out your papers? Will they help you find a place to live? Will they pay enough? More details = more advice.
