This is where I feel good because the rest of Poland catches up with me, LOL.

One guy ate 6 today, not that many but still 1500 calories or so. I had my customary one but didn't go overboard.

Pączki in Wrocław

So tomorrow (or today) is fat thursday or whatever they call it, and I would like to get my hands on some nice pączki with toffee (I'm crazy about toffee). I often find places with signs saying they have them, but when asking they never in fact do. Anyone know of any place in Wrocław that has them? And if not, any other kinds than the standard ones (I'm kind of sick of the ones with marmelade etc). Thanks.

I'm sure there will be plenty of that stuff around. One of my personal favourites is small cake shop in Hala Targowa near Ostrow Tumski, first floor on the right side, close to the wall. They usually have some decent stuff, including "pączki". I recommend also cheese cakes and kind of small "ptysie" (little cakes with soft cream)

Paczki, the Polish donuts, are very popular. Traditionally eaten on Fat Thursday, (Tlusty Czwartek), New Year's celebrations, Birthday Parties, and special occasions. There are many recipes for paczki, fruit filled Polish pastry. Some call for cream, some for vodka or rum. The traditional most famous Polish Paczki are filled with home made rose bud marmalade, finished with delicate flavored icing, and are simply delicious, so light, full of aroma and flavor. Everyone agrees that you can not eat just one or even two! Fat Tuesday, is an excuse to eat as many Paczki as possible. Pick up a dozen or two of Paczki for your family and friends or for your office.

The best pączki in Warsaw are sold by the A. Blikle company at several outlets -- one in Midowa street, another in Arcadia shopping centre adn WIlson Square. Prof. Blikle (heir to the 140-year-old family-owned company) is advertising a bank on Polish TV but, since he is associated with pączki, says something to the effect: 'There are only two kinds of pączki -- those filled with rose-petal jam and hopeless ones.'

This year Blikle pączki were going for 2.90 zł apiece (or $1 a throw). The big chainn sueprmarkets were selling bigger but poorer quality ones for 80 groszy.

In America, Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras = Fat Tuesday) is the traditonal Pączki Day. Detroit's once predominantly Polish industrial suburb of Hamtramck (now undercoing de-Polonisation cum Moslemisation) is the Pączki Capital of America.

Merged: Everybody eat a pączek, today?

How many? I had to buy my homesick wife a raspberry filled donut, as a poor substitute.

you will have to eventually learn how to make pączki yourself, ya know :) - she won't settle for some donuts for the rest of her life ;) (and don't expect her to learn how to make pączki herself - she's a modern woman after all ;)

You know what? I should. That would totally blow her mind.

that's what I meant - you need to give your woman a sense that she's being pampered - yearly husband-made pączkis pefrectly fit the bill :)

My number yesterday was 12.

Wow, impressive. I didn't touch even one despite being told (by someone who had a tray of them to get rid of) that being in Warsaw I should conform to Polish traditions!!

Johnny - you practically violated the custom of eating donuts! Go and have one (or 5) now to cleanse your soul of this terrible sin.
Donuts are essence and foundation. They keep the economy going, they create feeling of unity in the society, satisfy the herding instinct by standing in long lines to buy donuts. They are the sole basis of a healthy diet (?!) and solution to 65% of problems of humanity...

Remember that. Go and have at least one.

I looked at one. Then thought about those trousers I saw in Emporio Armani but can't fit into.

You're confusing them with beer.

Remember that. Go and have at least one.

Maybe.....

Be careful about paczki in the shops over the next week or so - they will all be yesterdays!
