It is common belief that Slavs, Poles, and especially Russians believe a lot in fate while Germanics are determinists and support personal responsibility. What do you think? Is belief in fate widespread among Slavs?

I found that the amount of superstitions a person has is inversely proportional to amount of science education one received.

.I mean you are told to pass over certain bridges

That reminds me! A friend of mine drove off the bridge because of a sneezing fit and had a hell of the time getting out of the car under water. For years after that I would roll my electric window down before driving on the bridge. But, that's not a superstition.

Russians I met were constantly giving interpretation of accidental events (for example, if a woman asks us where pushkins museum is and we were going that way, that is sure sign that things don't happen without reason, and that we made a good choice).

My surrounding believes in nihil like me.
Communism and science killed God.
Slobodan M. & West politicians Inc. Ltd. during 90 is killed belief in fate, because with that belief we would all give up and commit mass suicide.

We were left with biology and it's ways.
So, we believe in sex.
Things happen because of sex, that's a primary explanatory principle. Events are determined by quality and quantity of sex.

Based on classes I have done on this theme, they don't seem to be any more into superstitious beliefs than Celtic folk. In fact, Celts seem to be more into them. There is common ground (some universality) but maybe it is that I just haven't heard enough from the Slavic side. Therefore, I'm more inclined to believe that the Celts are more that way but who really knows, right?

Do Poles believe in fate?

Yes many do. Especially elders.

Some of the older generation believe, our lives have already been predetermined. I feel mankind usually has the choice, to practice free-will decisions. We try to control our own guidance and destination in life.

My sister told me to make sure that I take a good look at the Jupiter (I'm sure you guys noticed it in the skies during the last few weeks) and light a candle for a good luck...I did it, (what's the harm?), but I refuse to kill a black rooster at midnight and spit three time over my left shoulder... :)

Yes,these superstitions I hope do not work because some of them mean that you will be bound to one girl for ages.

It's not a question about stereotypes connected with my country, southern.
I believe in destiny (not in fate - it's more like "fatum" - sth really "fatal" in Polish).
my life depends on my own decisions.
What more can I say? Fate/destiny are sometimes blind.

My surrounding believes in nihil like me.

That couldn't be more generalizing and stereotypical.

There's more to life than sex...sure it creates life, but does it honestly determine it? If you believe that along with quality then I hope you're not referring to fascist ideals of eugenics, genetic valuing and so forth. It was Hitlers view that the quality of life depended on who had sex and the quality of those doing it would be the greater outcome...

That couldn't be more generalizing and stereotypical.

That was ironical.
You shouldn't take everything written here so serious.
Anyway, because I can feel your breath behind my back here (IP situation), I will try to give you a semi serious answer.

There are no stereotypes and generalizations in that people around me don't believe in god and fate, we chose each other because we have similar beliefs.

Then I explained why we don't believe in anything.... and what shaped our ideas.

Sex is the best :)) I don't have to clarify or elaborate that I hope ;)
Personal goals differ from person to person, so people have a choice to pick up their credo, no?

If you believe that along with quality then I hope you're not referring to fascist ideals of eugenics, genetic valuing and so forth.

Yes, if you didn't notice that before I'm the leader of Eugenic movement on PF. The president, CEO.

Yes, Hitler and I have similar views on human sexuality (among many other similar ideas).
One of those is that German and Slavic people should be in relation of subordination and superordination, small discrepancy is in only in the idea who has the role of the Herren Menschen. ;) ;) ;) ;) (100 winks here, just to prevent wrong conclusions)

Mobilize all potentials, including in this situation very useful Greek ones. (no insult meant ;))

but I refuse to kill a black rooster at midnight and spit three time over my left shoulder... :)

in that case you're in for a lot of bad luck! the spitting, that is, not sure about the rooster.

You mean modern day Scots?

Irish too ; )

I'm not remotely superstitious if that's the issue. In fact I go out of my way to do "unlucky" things sometimes. Regarding the notion of fate specifically, it barely registers. Your path is created as far as I'm concerned, not premapped.

But thinking about it, it does seem to be a romantic Eastern European cliché as portrayed in movies - destiny etc.

Olaf
They are doomed to believing in fate:)

Why "doomed" to believe?
I don't feel being "doomed" to anything, because I believe in what I want.
Try to say "you're not right" Olaf!
I will ask you then: "how come"?

This is an interesting thread Southern.
Good luck while reading plenty nice answers.
