Hiya

I'm originally from Manchester in the UK and have been in Gorzow for 2 weeks now - what is there to do here?

Help!

Teach the kids English! And stop worrying about your social life!

I will try to think of something and let you know. I have been to Gorzow Wielkopolski several times and it is a dreadful place from what I remember. In fact, now with all the young generation fleeing from Poland such a town must be even worse today than when I was there over twenty years ago. I suppose that you are fairly close to Poznan which is a major centre otherwise would not Budapest or Prague make a much nicer choice in the first place? Gorzow is not a pleasant town, rather like Radom, another nondescript place! Tear up your contract and head out would be my advice!

As a P.S., it is not a nice time of year with all the trees loosing their leaves and the nights drawing in. Summer is the best time to be in Poland, whenever I was there in Gorzow, it was always cold, wet and damp. Have you thought of taking some train rides to other major towns such as Gdansk if you have not already seen these places, of course.

I don't mind being in Gorzow, even though it is a really boring place. I like my job and the school that i work in, but it would be nice to know some other people who live here - i miss simple things like going out for a coffee with someone other than myself!! ;D

Thank you for the suggestions, I know someone who lives in Poznan, so i will be heading over there at some point. I am also going to Berlin this weekend for something to do.

P.S. The weather is a bit damp here at the moment - and slowly getting colder - when its winter i'm sure i will be happy to stay in the house! haha!

Are there any other private language schools in Gorzow, if so, there is bound to be another Brit with whom you could talk to. I can understand your problem. I spent a little while in South Korea whilst waiting for connection flights to Australia and it was my first time in South East Asia. It all seemed so different and interesting and my wife said that if I liked it so much, then why not try and get a job out there for a year or two. However, what seems romantic for a couple of hours with your family would seem very different for a year or two on your own. Language schools do not impress these points enough.

That is easy to say but not when you are on your own in a dump like Gorzow Wielkopolski!

Hi,

I know what you mean about it being a bit boring in Gorzow. There are a few things to do and a few places outside of Gorzow but close by worth visiting.

I live here too, moved here from Manchester also.

Drop me a message... it would be nice to meet you, there are not many English people in this city!

I'm sure you've seen the new "Askana" shopping place by now?

A modern cinema will open there in December which should hopefully be a bit better than the current one:

Kina

The swimming pool isn't bad, they also have quite a good gym, next door is a football place which will shortly become an ice rink once it gets a bit colder.

For trips outside Gorzow try Lubniewice or Łagów but at this time of year it's just not the same as a nice summers day.

I lived in the city centre for a few years.

I have a small internet business I run from home, it only requires a few hours a day so it leaves me with a lot of spare time. I've recently been helping out at a local nursery with a bit of English tuiton and taken on one private student.

If you are on your own, you could be very lonely in New York City. It is all about relationships at the end of the day. You can be happy almost anywhere, it is all in the mind.

I can see the piggy 'Muckal' is still active on this forum - playing a Polonophobic Englishman (the piggy isn't Brit), an expert on Poland. The piggy is allowed to spread its hateful muck on this forum. That's why this forum is so depressing and will never quite take off. Admin, wy don't you kick out this hate-spreading alien creature? Do you like and agree with its hateful messages?

I am simply talking about life overseas for a TESOL teacher and the problems that someone on their own where they can not speak the language and know very little of the local culture can work against someone's moral. This is not hate or anything anti Polish. This is true of any TESOL teacher working anywhere around the World.

Maybe you should all try to meet up and make your time in Gorzow more worth while?

if you are all living in Gorzow, you could put a little advert in the local paper, if they have one. Or maybe there is a notice board in the sports hall?

The only trouble is, of course, is that local newspapers, written in Polish, may not attract English native speakers working in Poland as teachers. If there are other private English Language schools in Gorzow, it might be worth going for a walk and try to make contact with the native teaching element there.

Being a bigoted old prat I would imagine you find most places dreadful and from UK?How ironic! You call yourself a teacher? With the comments you make about other peoples countries you should be struck off the teaching register. Those poor kids in Gorzow. Do us all a favour and **** off back to Asia with all the other Nazi's.

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's exactly what I'm trying to keep in mind as I consider moving to Lomza.

Pudddddin, Are you still in Gorzów? I am about an hour away from you in the middle of nowhere! Let me know if you fancy meeting sometime. I have a car so I could pop up to Gorzow any time! I am from Scotland, I'm 25. Been here 18 months. I'm also an English teacher.
