Living in POZNAN - big deal?

What's so good about Poznan? I will be living in the Eskulap dormitory. Is this a nice area? What about the area around the Karol Marcinkowski Medical University? How is this area? What are the people like? What is the City like? Friendly people, who will welcome foreigners? Is it a safe City? What is the food like? Nightlife? What do people usually do? What is transportation like? I will not get a car, but will I be able to travel around the City? Trams? Taxi's? I'm just trying to get an idea of the City, because it will be my home for the next 6 years!

Ooops, I forgot to add, I'm coming from USA.

I don`t know anything about those areas - but Poznan is definitely one of the best cities here (though its not the best). I`m sure you`re going to like it.

You`re also probably going to find the food and the public transportation better than in the US.

I hope you'll like Poznań. I've been studying there for 4 years now, without ever being there earlier and I felt at home after a few months. It is different than other Polish cities and Poznań people pride themselves on being from Poznań - I bet you'll notice that quickly :) They are used to foreigners (lots of them working there in multinational corporations) so I guess you won't feel like a pioneer there.
Transportation is quite well organised - all the most important places are near the centre, and the city is easy to move around. I'm not sure about the area where you're going to stay but normally you can choose between buses and trams (the latter run more often). The Medical Academy is in the very centre and there is a tram stop in front of the building, one more nearby, and a two bus stops round the corner. That's one of the easiest places to get to and from.
There's plenty of interesting pubs and clubs in Poznań (there's even one in Eskulap building), make sure you test most of them while in Poznań - they're really worth visiting. And I'm sure you'll find nice company as well, especially among students - they are curious about foreigners and if you ask them for help, you won't have to ask again.
When it comes to safety, I tend to consider it a safe place, eventhough you can hear about some nasty things happening once in a while. (I even lived for 3 years in a quarter that's considered to be one of the most dangerous and nothing ever happened to me, even if I came home late at night. No terrible stories from the neighbours either. But maybe I'm just lucky? ;)
The city itself is very cosy - it's big but you don't really feel it; after a few months you'll know where the main districts are and the public transportation system. There are several nice parks in the city, including Cytadela - considered to be the largest urban park [can I call it like that?] in Europe. You can find lost of old and interesting places that you probably don't see very often in the US.
Food is easy to find:) You can choose from many cheap restaurants offering traditional Polish food, others - a bit more expensive - with international cuisine, but you simply have to visit at least one Bar Mleczny (Milk Bar)! Once you've done that, you'll know what I mean;) Food is dirt cheap there and, if not very good, than at least good - I recommend Smakosz (on a corner down from Marcinkowskiego Str
There are music pubs that invite famous international musicians - you can try the pubs in Stary Browar or Blue Note (for jazz mainly). If you feel like going to the movies, you can choose one of the many cinemas - the biggest one has got 20 screens (so I've heard).
I guess you'll have enough time to discover all that on your own. I hope you feel more encouraged now.

I'm not a big fan of Poznan and I have spent some years living there. I used to have a girlfriend who lived back then in Esculap and although she was a law student she shared room with medical students. All I want to tell you is ... medical students have shit loads to study ... I mean REALLY a LOT of memorizing etc. Poznan? Not green enough for me and too tidy but has some cheap airlines out of town and Berlin with lots of air trafic is few hours away so one can often get changes of scenery for no huge price.

I just visited Poznan, Warsaw, Krakow, and Berlin, and of the four I enjoyed Poznan the most. I felt like it was just the right size and really easy to get around in. I am jealous.

It`s depend on were are You from. The prices are not so excessive, but big towns are more expensive than the countrysides. If You are from USA, west Europe won`t worry, the prices are so much lower here.

im considering moving to poznan for work and im a young guy so..how is the party scene here? are there alot of young people? how are the girls? where i live, better looking girls are hard to come by...i dont want to move to more of the same thing!

The party scene is nice. There's a good variety of clubs/pubs and there's a good chance you'll find something to your liking. There are a lot of young people and a beautiful girl will not be hard to come by at all. If you're from the US you'll notice that the ratio of women to men is the opposite :) you'll have a good time......guaranteed.

My great grandparents, definitely maternal and we think paternal too, are from Poznan. It's wonderful to hear such great things about the city. My sister and I hope to travel there next year.

thats good to hear.. i am from the us so it would be nice to get away from the hordes of fat girls haha.. i've seen that there is an airforce base near the city, is there a large american community there?

WEll, there are fat girls everywhere, so I hope it doesn't disappoint you when you see them in Poland too. Yes, there quite a few attractive women and your eyes can be busy. Juust remember to keep your tongue in your mouth...and mind your drooling ;)
That's Poznań-Krzesiny Airbase. The Poznan Ławica (Intl. Airport) was also an airforce base and also the oldest in Poznan.
There are a few Americans as well as other international students. I've run into Americans, but not as many as I thought I would. Last trip I didn't hear/see any. Are you worried about not being able to communicate? Believe me, it's nice to get away from Americans ;)

im not so worried about the language.. i speak polish, but i know that after a few months in poland ill be lookin for some americans to talk about football and other stuff. while im asking, are ther any gyms in the area? or any gun ranges? im hoping to bring my guns with me. ill have to find out how hard that is to do

I don't think there are many shooting ranges in Poland....That I know of anyway. If you do some research, maybe you can find a gun club near there.
