First post to this forum so be kind, looking for any info in regards to my fathers surname of Szwed which was americanized to Sweyd, Ellis Island info says grandmother came from Domaczyny, Galicia and grandfather came from Rycz....???? and my mothers surname was Szygowski/Sygowska which was americanized to Sygoski, Ellis Island info says grandmother came from Chudzin (which I think is located in the current country of Belarus) but used to be part of Poland and grandfather (who came over 3+ years before) was from Plock (Russia, but I believe it should have been Poland). they came to the US before WW 1. Looking for anyone with similar surnames and trying to find and or confirm the locations of the places listed above.

Hei and welcome to you ;)

About Szwed, it means "Swede" (from Sweden) in Polish. I already saw this name in Poland before...

Good luck :)

(I'm going to bed, it's 2:30 AM here...)

Krakowska, thank you for the information on the germanfied version of the surname szwed, when my grandmother and grandfather arrived at Ellis Island in the US, they were listed as citizens of Austria and nationality of Polish, I have found that the surname has been changed a few times which is making the task of building a family tree a bit more interesting, the name has gone from szwed to sweyd to sweek to sweet and back to sweyd. Again thanks for the responce and have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
