Having gained my bus drivers licence at the first attempt, I duly went out with my brand new double decker bus, after half an hour, gues what??? Yep I hit a car!!! So in essence, the testing of all new drivers meets all of the

Many years ago, I went on a bus drivers training course. After the course, one young driver who trained at the same time as me, took a brand new double decker bus and drove it up the wrong road under a low railway bridge and smashed the whole top deck off!

Well, in my country (Slovakia) every applicant has to pass a battery of test before he is allowed to drive buses - medical, psychological (to eliminate dummies or nuts), now I think it is also neurological and EEG. And of course the driving school, which is not so easy. And the examiners are traffic police constables, so one mistake and good bye...

I also believe that everyone who drives buses should have at least the minimal language knowledge. I mean, if somebody is unable to read stupid traffic signs, thats really a little too much and every company who allows this should loose their contract and pay a huuuuge fine. I work in Norway now and before I came here, I went on a 6-week intenive language course and had another seven weeks training here. Also, i still go to language classes. I am not saying I understand everythink the passengers tell me (luckily most of the locals also speak English), especially if the passenger is an old lady who forgot her false teeths home, but at least I manage to sell everyone the kind of ticket he wants, can provide information on routes and schedules and know the traffic rules (and signs). Thats because my company realises that driving a bus full of people is quite a responsibility and you cannot hope that if you put and unprepared driver in a foreign county behind the wheel it will just turn out somehow...

I am both a 3rd gen Polish Immigrant (my grandmother moved here in 1939) and also a born and bred mancunian. I am not arguing any of your points, but wish to add another. We have a very high rate of assault on bus drivers across all greater manchester. without various people who are motivated to tolerate this for the wage paid, i fear the government would use our taxes to subsidise the bus companies even further. i wouldnt do it after what ive seen. worth a thought.

Dear englishman,
It wasn't my intention to become a member of this forum, but I was looking for some stuff accidentaly I stepped on your conversation with the others...
Frankly I don't care if the administrator of this forum will delete my account asap, I would like to ask you since so EASY you critisize and bahave as a racist, DO YOU HAVE ANY F.........ING IDEA HOW MANY SIMPLE UK DRIVERS GET KILLED IN CYPRUS WITH RENTED CARS EVERY SUMMER? DO YOU HAVE ANY F........ING IDEA HOW MANY DRUNK UK KIDS WITH BRITTISH DRIVING LICENSES, GET INJURED OR DEAD, BECAUSE THEY ARE ON HOLIDAYS, AND BECAUSE SIMPLY THEY IGNORE ANYONE AND EVERYTHING?
How can you decide who hires who, and how can you say to a man who is probably STARVING, not to look for a better future? Do you have a problem with peole who want to live honest? Even if they don't go for holidays to MALIA for 2 weeks, every year. Even if they don't buy a new ipod every 4 months.
And you know what else? A top bus constructor last april organised a driving seminar in to which 150 bus drivers from all europe participated. I will tell you that the 10th driver was Polish and the first UK bus driver was somewhere between 50 and 60th place, among 150. How about that?
For your info, I am NOT polish, and I have saved my life, and my passengers lives, Countless times simply by avoiding a crash with a drunk uk teen on my bus. Yes I am Greek. And I live in Poland, .........

GET KILLED IN CYPRUS WITH RENTED CARS

The worst bit of road is between the holiday resorts on the coast of Portugal....Huge numbers of hire cars with Brits at the wheel get written off on this road.....many die....
