My uncle (in his 50's) has been diagnosed with leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant, as early as August. We don't know if his older siblings will be a match, and if not, the doctors will look first to the US National Bone Marrow Donor Registry and then go to Poland for a match. His father came from Poland, but died when my uncle was very young.
The doctors are focusing on his Polish heritage, as genetically it will be a better match. I have been on the Bone Marrow Registry for the past 2 years and have confirmed that I am not a match.
If anyone is interested in joining the US National Bone Marrow Donor Registry, please go to their website (google: marrow.org), read what is required, and please sign up. Or you can reply to this posting.
Thanks.
