Why so many British can't spell ?

They usually don't know any foreign languages, so couldn't they at least learn their own... ? Any comments ? Are they just stupid or that's something else ?

The English spelling system is amongst the silliest in the world.
I make a few spelling mistakes occasionally. I usually spot them and put them right. That's usually a result of typing too fast.

As for other people, some people have genuine problems with spelling - my brother, for example, has very bad spelling and always has. That is a form of dyslexia, which occurs more amongst English speakers than speakers of languages with a more phonetic orthography. I have met one or two 'dyslexics' whom I wouldn't categorise with my brother, who is, believe it or not, possibly more intelligent than me.

Some just never bothered to learn to spell properly when they were at school and somehow still get away with it later in life. Some people are just plain stupid.

It's not just spelling - punctuation seems to cause even more problems.

By the way, Irish Gaelic seems to have quite a silly spelling system, and don't get me started on French!

Schools in the UK start teaching French (Modern Secondary language) at the age of 8/9 which is Years 4-6 dependant on the primary school attending .... this language continues being taught in secondary school until the child leaves at 16

At Year 9 which is when a child is 13 years old they have the option to take on a further language subject usually Spanish or German and study this for the next three years until leave school

Other languages are taught in selected schools like Latin, Polish, Italian etc etc but primarily these are studied at evening classes at a local college that is running them due to demand ....

Each Region of the country has its own dialect and its own language if you like and thus spellings and written english differs based on the geographical location :)

You will only find the QUEENS ENGLISH spoken or written near the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk or anyone associated to the Queen ... for anyone to believe the Queens english is what the rest of the country speaks is utter ridiculous :D

i suppose it is a bit tricky because the words "look" different than they sound. but then im not a native English speaker and my English spelling is pretty darn good. better than many English people's i know. so im not sure how you Brits can explain yourselves? :P
