This year's Jewish Culture festival will take place from 27 June through 5 July in Krakow.

I went for the great music last year :)

Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow

The 20th Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow is currently in progress...

http://www.jewishfestival.pl/index.php?lang=e

http://www.jewishfestival.ajctv.pl/

...unfortunately, this time, it will not be shown live on Polish state TV, but there
will be a retransmission of the final concert. For those of you who can watch
Polish TV, it will be shown on TVP 2, on Sunday, July 4th at 11.30 PM (CET).

We will have the pleasure of enjoying the music of Septeto Rodriguez Cuban Jewish
Allstars, Konsonans Retro, Parno Graszt, Festival All Stars Orchestra and others.

I hope more such festivals will be organised in many Polish cities in the future!

Will Leonard Cohen be playing? He is a legend!

I think I can safely say that this forum is 70% Jewish and 30% Polish ;) ;) (in terms of issues)

Leonard will be 76 in Sep this year. He has done well for himself in his career. Does he live in America or Israel?

He certainly is a legend. I don't think he will be performing during this festival,
but the program is impressive nonetheless:

Wow, that's a packed schedule :) Many Poles are much more like Jews than they think. They love to shroud themselves in an air of mystery but I can see through the haze they try and create. Poles are NOT as enigmatic as the Japanese, on average.

Exploring each other's respective culture is healthy :) Asides from the normal classics of Cohen's, I like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG4ndbhOkpI. He tells a nice tale :)

If festivals like this lead to more mutual understanding, I'm all for it. After all, it's a proven fact that cultures come closer together through music, food and dance. Ideally would be (and I don't know if there already is sth like that) a Polish festival in Tel Aviv. More of these and we really are one step closer to being one big happy family.

Normally I am not so much in favour of a seperate Jewish cultural festival, I'd see rather a Jewish section as part of a bigger festival with cultures all over the world, but in the Polish case it is needed for at least a few years. Ppl who lived in prejudice will be able to learn now that Jews are not after world domination after all and that they have a great culture. Maybe in the next decade it would also for Poland be enough to have a Jewish section in bigger, more global, cultural festivals, but for now this is ok.

Leonard Cohen...I didn't think he'd still performed? The guy must be somewhere around his 80's...But here is my favourite:

Leonard Cohen - Teachers (live 1968)

Sorry to mention Cohen so often, Torq, but legends are legends! I like the French interlude in the song I posted where he talks about losing his family and children. He seems to speak French with more pride than those French footie players :)

As for the festival, I hope Gliwice does sth similar. Love it or hate it, Jewish culture is steeped in history and is interesting for anyone connected with underlying human values and modern principles (how they have been shaped).

This seems a little off-topic. I can't imagine Cohen, though purportedly a practicing orthodox Jew, and definitely a self-proclaimed Zen Buddhist, ever playing at a small, local festival devoted to reviving memories of Jewish Culture in Poland.

I'm in fact surprised that he should be mentioned in connection with any Jewish festival at all. Is that how Cohen is seen in Poland - first and foremost a Jewish singer (as opposed to a singer and poet who also happens to be Jewish)?

Incidentally, he will be playing one concert in Poland, this fall, in Katowice:-)

Leonard Cohen in Poland:

His website list him playing in Katowice on Oct 4, 2010 7:00pm in "Spodek", the massive sports arena (looks like a flying saucer)

Leonard Cohen Website:

Spodek Website:

You're quick, I must admit. But if the rest of this new quasi-thread doesn't belong here, why the beginning stayed? And your intelligent riposte. Touche, nott, you're dead.

MareGaea:
Sorry to be rude, but what the heck are you talking about? This is about a festival celebrating Jewish culture. Nobody asked for an explanation of the complex Polish-Jewish relationship.

I am talking about your attitude to Poles as a nation. It doesn't help to heal old wounds if the only thing we get from the other side is patronizing and lectures on what we should do, as being so different from the more civilised nations.

And I don;t really care about your patience threshold, so spare me your threats. Does the word 'patronizing' ring a bell?

---------------------------------------------------------
This is a thread about a festival. If it ends up yet another argument about Poland or Jews those involved will be suspended for an extended period of time.

Well said, Mods! This is NOT about old bones of contention but actually opening eyes through a festival. Some just don't want to and that's the problem. I recommend a reading of the program as it contains some interesting prospects.

His native Canada. And no surprise that he speaks French as he was born in Montreal. He was done performing but unfortunately his manager stole most of his money and left him broke so he had to resume his career.

Yes, Matisyahu is a Chasidic Jew, beat-boxer and a reggae/hip hop performer. What a mixture! That's why I wanted to see this but all the tickets had been sold, bl**dy he*l!!!! ;)

Similar background - Jewish, same era 60's 70's 80's and genre of music, Serge Gainsbourg was more rebelious and appealed more to the avant-garde. His legacy has been firmly established, and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential popular musicians . Both Gainsbourg and Cohen had/have a natural gift for sounding both bored and irrepressibly dirty.

I guess he just wasn't promoted enough in Scotland or even here in Poland. It's strange that an artist of stature escapes my attention but now I know. Thanks :)

La Decadanse, Lemon Inceste etc. You must have heard of one of the great cultural icons of the C20.

4th of July in Warsaw - are there Americans groups planning celebrations?  Tuesday Night Gdansk - where do I go for nightlife?
