I'm visiting Krakow on December 15 - December 22 and I'm staying with a friend in an apartment on Bronowicka street (north-west area of Krakow, I believe).

If anyone wants to get a cup of coffee or see some sites let me know. PM me or something.

In Krakow...care for a coffee?

Anyone care for a meeting tomorrow (Sunday) in Krakow? Just visiting here for a week and tomorrow I have free with no intimate knowledge of things to do.

Hi,

I am visiting Krakow from 22 FEB - 03 MAR with the aim of finding out peoples attitudes to membership of the EU for a book I am researching - is Euroland proving good for Poland?

Can you put me in contact with any objective people in Krakow who would be happy to give me their views whilst I am there? I would really appreciate any help you can give at all.

Best wishes,

John.

Hi John,

If you do not speak Polish you will hear only positive opinions. Majority of educated Polish People is for Polish membership.
Against are mostly people who do not speak English (-:
Presently we have in Polish parliament no political party which would be against it.
Even Polish farmers started to change their mind because of EU finacial support.
Do not forget about Catholic Church in Poland. But this institution however partly is nationalistic (Radio Marie enviroment) cannot be against Polish membership, because Polish pope strongly supported
this idea.

Greetings form Krakow John

Hi Premek,

Thankyou very much indeed for your insight.

I was very much hoping that at least some independent thinkers would be raising the banner for those who have reservations about the EU.

If intellectuals and those with higher education tend to think one way, and I don't speak Polish, do you have any suggestions about how I can hear grass root opinion?

Where would a referrendum end-up on membership of the EU today?

What could influence the 'pro' lobby - inclusion of Turkey, Agricultural reform or continuing moves towards presidency etc?

Best wishes,

John.

You have to know one thing about Poland.
Polish intellectuals are really ashemed when they criticize EU because
being a modern Pole means to be for UE.
It is abit different from the situation we you have in GB, where it is
much more trendy to have at least a bit distance to EU.

The only one thing which could influence Polish enthusiasm for EU
would be agricultural reform but do not worry France will never accept it (-:
Poland will also always support each extending of EU (Tukey inclusive).

But it is too much to write.
This is my email office@polishviaskype.com
If you are interested
Email me when you are in Poland or short before you will come
if we find convenient time we can have cup of coffee and talk.

And wear warm clothes when you come. They say we will have -10 in Krakow (-:

John, you know that your request is an extreme sport.
There are thousands of aspects of membership of the EU: political, social, economic, military, philosophic... Nobody controls all of this. Thus you can not find a really objective people. Attitude depends on self-identifying mostly: Do you feel yourself an European and want to chase your high evolved neighbours standards, or: do you felt in love to this semi-Byzantine atmosphere which was common here during Russian domination for over 40 years? For instance: I was born and live in Cracow (a very international city) and considering this and my family ethos I am "sentenced to" be an Euroenthusiast, but some people have different histories, standings, then opinions. Who is objective?

Well if I had been certain that I could come in contact with the views of Przemek and Peter on the net I might not have felt it necessary to travel to Poland - but then I would have missed the chance to find out more about your fascinating people.
I understand, or am starting to understand that Poland is going to be a challenge - possibly a multi-layered one at that. On one hand you have this unsurpassed tradition of thinking for yourselves, through WW2 and the break with Russia, yet on the other the EU seems to give you no problem.
Could it be that Poles see the EU as in an evolutionary process, one in which the political bumps will even out - given enough time and goodwill? Or is there the possibility that the political honeymoon could wear thin and that the humps be revealed? What would it take for possibility to become probability?
I am new to this forum and don't want to offend so if my bubbling ruminations were causing offence, you are welcome to mail me off-list where my address is crawford@c2i.net.
John.

After my last mail, at 01:50, it occured to me that I had written clumsily - even that I had managed to express the exact opposite of what was intended.
So, when I say "I might not have felt it necessary to travel to Poland" when referring to Przemek and Peter's mails, what I intended to say was that, because of the value of the advice of what they were offering, their valuable insights were helping to make my visit to Krakow redundant.
John.
