Meeting girlfriends family and friends- phrases and wedding

Hej!
I'm going to Poland for a few weeks to stay with my girlfriend and I will also be going with her to her cousins wedding. I was hoping that some people could give me some important phrases to use with people besides 'Jestem David z Szkocja' .

Also, I would like to know what to expect from the wedding which is just a few days before I leave. Is there any songs that are likely to be sung at the wedding because I would like to know a few beforehand. I guess Sto Lat will definately be playing. I am very excited about going to this in my kilt :) .

Dzienki, David.

Assuming you know how to pronounce:

Gorzko - it will be shouted probably after Sto lat, and it's asking the bride and the groom to kiss

Czy mogę cię/panią prosić do tańca? - Would you like to dance? (cię - informal, panią - formal)

Na zdrowie! - a toast before drniking vodka/wine,
more specific toasts:
Zdrowie panny młodej! - To the bride!
Zdrowie pana młodego - To the groom!

when you drink after a toast, it's recommended to drink all (to the bottom of the glass), otherwise some people (not everybody) may take offence
(So if you are not a heavy drinker and don't want to get drunk too early - traditional Polish wedding starts around 4.00-6.00 PM and lasts about 12 hours - it's important who is filling your glass with vodka, you may try to ask this person to fill it only partially)

Do dna! - To the bottom! (when drinking a toast)

a popular song (about drinkg vodka, of course)
Pijmy po kropelce, pijmy po kropelce,
Póki wódka jest w butelce.
Pijmy aż do rana, Pijmy aż do rana,
nasza wódzia ukochana

it's longer, but I don't sing, so I don't remember the words, besides you should score some points for your Polish even with this short fragment.

and when you're in your kilt, some stupid people may joke about it (as it probably happens to the Scottish men in other countires too), just don't mind them :)

I relish the comments about the kilt. It's my national dress and I'm more than happy to wear it. That is unless I can get a cheapish tailores smart outfit in Poland.

I'm hoping my Polish will have vastly improved in the 2 and a bit weeks leading up to the wedding and that I do get to chat and have fun too. I'll learn all these phrases so far and let people know about the day.

have fun. lots of food vodka etc. you WILL BE exhausted. My nieces wedding started at 5pm and ended 5am.

Be prepared for lots of funny antics, and group dances. Wearing a suit is fine.

Definitly always pick up your glass for toast otherwise whoever wrote someone may take offense was right.

Probably you will hear another short song:
"A teraz idziemy na jednego, a teraz idziemy wodke pic"
Thats usually when band is taking short break and people go to drink more vodka :)
Like Krzysztof said - you will hear "Gorzko" fiew times;)
Knowing weddings you will hear songs like "Cudownych rodzicow mam", "Zlote obraczki" "Winda do nieba" etc.
You should expect lots of singing around oczepiny (bride takes of veil, and groom fly). Those are mostly funny little songs.
When everyone will be already drunk - you can expect to hear "hej Sokoly"

Polish wedding usually starts around 5-6 pm and last till morning. Then a bit of sleep and there is part 2 - poprawiny. Starts around mid day and last till evening.

And when you come back - please write your impressions about polish wedding :)

Heh, yes he's really something. Especially when everyone is merrily dancing in a circle and he's having his own private rave.
Oh that made me laugh, funniest video I've seen in a while - let's just hope that's not you Dawidku, especially with the kilt already grabbing people's attention :P
By the way, Polish weddings sound like such good fun. I may have to marry a Polish woman based on these descriptions!
