the British media
I don't describe the Daily (Hate) Mail, the News of the (Narrow-Minded) World, the Daily Torygraph and so on, as a reliable way of gauging public opinion. They have their own agendas, and the media works by finding or inventing a problem before banging on about it. Maybe it's because I don't read the papers that I'm unaware of the opinions of everyone around me.

There are groups of immigrants in the UK where most (!) of people don't work
There are still, I believe, rules against those in the process of claiming political asylum in the UK from working. Idiots confuse this with laziness.
Unemployment occurs in pockets - areas of higher unemployment tend to be the poorer areas where work has dried up and disappeared, especially working-class jobs. Those on higher salaries with better qualifications and/or experience are the ones who had the ability to get out. Those working at the bottom are more likely to have been immigrants or descendents of recent immigrants. This can make it look as though it is ethnic or cultural groups who shirk their work-responsibility.

and what ? Nothing.
That is not true. People living on state benefits, whatever their background, are criticised (even vilified) by the media. There are times when even the British media steers away from classifying these people by ethnicity.
So, to sum up my points and throw in another question for you:
Yes, there is a kind of polonophobia, which does extend to a phobia of workers / immigrants from other 'eastern-bloc' countries. Poland and Polish people just happen to be the most visible.
No, I don't believe it is as big a thing in the minds of British people as you think.
You seem to be basing your opinions on the media. Newspapers, Radio, TV, this forum.
How much do you believe what you call 'the media' says?
