Mother of all hangovers....Polish Beer!

Why does Polish beer give you the worst hangover imaginable and leaves a very bad chemical taste in the mouth? A friend told me it's because Poland is the only European country to add raw alcohol to the process, does anyone know if that is actually true?

if you think thats bad dont have half a litre bottle of vodka with OJ as mixer whilst in Poland .. then get dragged round krakow with college friends who then pass you the piwo in quick succession .. i think i managed about 6 when i suddenly slid off the bar stool ....

i think i actually have never felt so ill in my life that night or following day though i was not the worst for wear .. one lad nearly had an ambulance called on him as he literally comatosed himself on polish alcohol :S

personally I find that you get less of a handover since there is less rubbish added to the beer...

Eh? WTF have you been drinking? Perhaps you're just not accustomed to drinking good beer?

I have. Tyskie and Okocim do it to me every time. I've never had a problem with Zywiec (spelling?) though. I thought it was because the beers are brewed a bit differently for the US market, but Tyskie got me in Poland as well. Just 2 Tyskies gave me a nasty hangover.

Funny thing was that it was only the Pilseners that did it. Any of the darker beers (which I prefered anyway) went down without issue!

Do you think the beer tastes different in the US than Poland??

I wonder if they brew them diffrently for export

i used to get this with EB but nothing else - friends said it was caused by chemicals

Strangely, I managed to comfortably drink more last time I was in Poland.
Maybe I was just drinking the wrong beer.
And the wrong vodka.
And the wrong spirytus.
Or it's just something that not having to go to work the next day does to you.

However, Black Boss did me no good whatsoever, but that was in England.

A few centuries ago, when I was still very much into experimenting with all kinds of alcohols, I noticed one rule that worked with me; local microclimate had a lot to do with how I felt the morning after a night of drinking. Tatra mountains, and most mountains in general were good. Almost no hangover the following day. Upper Silesia was by far the worst - I felt like Zeus about to give birth to Athena.

I used to like Okocim for some reason I just cant handle it anymore.

The zywiec seems to taste much better

Polish or American??

I say in the Polish hood it would be mosty Okocim but Zyweic is popular too.

Anywhere else Miller lite would be the biggest seller, sinse youre used to
good beer youll probably call it American **** like most people that know better.

i like to drink beer so will stick to the polish i think... ;-)

The beer definitely has a different taste in the US as compared with Poland. It's not as good in the US. All imported beer is brewed differently for the US market. I forget the reason why, but I believe it all has to do with te prohibition laws from 1933.

There are a bunch of popular imported beers in the US that I won't touch after having had them in their home countries. Bass and Heineken stand out in particular.

Some people also drink Old Style and Budweiser but I wouldnt recommened it..:)

When I was in Holland the Heineken tasted so good but here in the US I cant
stand it....Horrible!!!

Absolutely no clue why they do it the way they do.

But I also agree with you regarding American beer. Stay away from the major manufacturers. Anheuser Busch, Coors, and Miller are all dishwater.

My friends and I graduated away from those places about 10 years ago and truly believe in the microbrewery revolution that happened here at that time. I highly recommend some experimentation in that area if you want a really good American brew.

If you can get some Pennsylvania or Vermont micro brewed beers out by you, I have some good suggestions. Unfortunately, we don't get any mid-western micro brews in the East, so I am at a loss as to what the better mid western micro brewers are.

Well I'm a big fan of Tyskie. Think that in Poland the beer varies greatly. Sledz made a good point about export quality maybe being different. Okocim seems to have got better. Zywiec still really sucks (in my opinion) and thank God that EB has disappeared. As far as I know most of it is South African owned now anyway! Cheers folks

Now that I really think about it, I cannot drink any of the Czech pilsners. I don't know why but it tastes "tinny" to me. Okocim, Tyskie, etc I like as well as Wolters and Braunschweiger but the pilsners do not agree with me for some reason.

I tried Łomza before it tasted ok , a litte bitter though

I went to Łomża and got Łomża'd on Łomża.
I normally drink bitter, so any bitterness was something I quite like.
There are about three different Łomża brews. One called Export. I don't know where they are exporting it to, because unfortunately it's not to where I live.

This is the one I was able to get here, next time I go to the beverage depot
I`ll see what else they have.

Actually standard Warka is a pretty fine drop as well. Another one that was excellent and I have not seen for a while was Hevelius, I think it was from Poznan.
