Absolutely no clue why they do it the way they do.
But I also agree with you regarding American beer. Stay away from the major manufacturers. Anheuser Busch, Coors, and Miller are all dishwater.
My friends and I graduated away from those places about 10 years ago and truly believe in the microbrewery revolution that happened here at that time. I highly recommend some experimentation in that area if you want a really good American brew.
If you can get some Pennsylvania or Vermont micro brewed beers out by you, I have some good suggestions. Unfortunately, we don't get any mid-western micro brews in the East, so I am at a loss as to what the better mid western micro brewers are.
