Music tastes in Poland

What kind of music is popular in Poland??A lot of my polish friends are really into the hip hop scene and trance music etc.....is there a big movement for this in Poland??

There's a lot of people in Cracow that are into Jazz music (including myself), especially in my academical environment. Stuff like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea etc.

of jazz fusion not to many bands play like that anymore.
Jeff Beck one of my favorite guitar players. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy. Roy Buchanan
still listen to alot of blues. Cant wait till next summer for the Blues festival.

Yeah, Hip Hop was very popular few years ago. It still has a strong position on the market, but I guess that it's weakening a little bit, and it isn’t that innovative as it used to be. As for trance music, it seems that it was always very popular.

There's also a lot of Rock fans here, as myself for example, but the mainstream seems to ignore us.

Well, from Polish bands I like Kult/Kazik the most, most of the other ones is rather forgetttable.

Stańko, Urbaniak, Możdżer, Matuszkiewicz, Karolak are some good and very well known Polish Jazz musicians. Stańko is preety popular overseas, he recorded with Gary Peacock,
Cecil Taylor etc.

Speaking about modern popular music in Poland, I would say it's like everywhere else though, a regular tanned anorectic girls that are taking AIDS medicine singing "i love you
babe" (mandaryna?). I couldn't forgot Michał Wiśniewski, who is a main Polish transvestite
and he is making better arranged genre of Disco-Polo for Polish handicapped teenagers with deficiency of life. To balance the image of Polish so called popular music, I might add that there's some good stuff on the market as well. One of them is John Porter who (unfortunately) teamed up with Anita Lipnicka - female polish vocalist.

Times of good pop like the police or duran duran are gone and won't come back, also if you're a fan of The Clash, Hendrix or Pink Floyd nobody knows what's the deal. Don't get me wrong, I don't wan't to wade in to generalisation, but it's exactly how I see it. Also I might add that 70% of Poles don't understand Jazz music.

Concerning Polish hip-hop, it was never innovative nor experimental, it was fully based on nearly 3 decades of this music and culture in the US. We never had our Polish Larry Levan, we never had Polish Last Poets we never had Polish Aesop Rock and we won't have Polish anticon (one of the most experimental quasi hip-hop labels in states). There's absolutely no audience for that kind of creativity in Poland, because most of the audience have stereotypical vision of hip-hop and they wouldn't pick it up.

i disagree with this SunRa - I spent a couple of years in the tri city in the mid 9Os and there was definately innovation and creativity on the hip-hop/big beat/acid jazz front...

...and when i go out there now i am hearing hip-hop more than i would on a night out in the uk - i am also seeing innovative and creative jamming sessions everyweek lead mainly by glennskii - see above link - who also lead a project called groovekojad [sp] five or so year ago..

... one thing i have noticed, however, is that many poles still associate hip-hop with black artists and have trouble acknowledging white artists...

There was one very good hip-hop band. I do not like that kind of mucis, but that band I could listen even though I am a rock fan. The band name is called Kaliber44. They had a couple good song, the best definitely "+ i -" about fear of death and AIDS.

There are many good bands that are worth listening, I listed them in other topic, let me list them again with a short desription.

Hey - Polish band with famous singer Kasia Nosowska, good rock, lately pop/rock
Pidzama Porno - Punk with clever lyrics, best song "Twoja generacja" about the generation of young Poles
Akurat - interesting punk band listened mostly by students
Republika - does not exist anymore, the singer is dead unfortunately (G.C. - RIP) good pop/rock with piano in a lot of songs.
Farben Lehre - good punk, also popular among students, however some songs sound quite similar, one of good songs - matura
T.Love - some good songs, pop/rock, leader - Muniek Staszczyk
Myslovitz - popular polish soft rock/britrock band, my fovorit songs: My (We)
Coma - one of the best Polish rock bands, with good long songs. I know only their first lp, but they relased new one lately. Their best song - Leszek Zukowski (I recommend, really good)
Happysad - good in live performances

That is all I can think of right now, there are plenty of more, Polish rock is really good, despite it is not popular abroad...

Concrete names and reason why do you think that they were innovative. You know, like for example Anti-Pop Consortium in US (the ones that recorded for very well known Warp records). They were mostly known for combining hip-hop with electronica which was preety much avant-garde back then (late 90's). I found it weird, that u said about Polish hip-hop, that it was innovative in mid 90's, since back then, hip-hop music (and whole culture) in Poland was preety much born and it was mostly influenced by groups like Lords of The Underground or House of Pain. First quasi hip-hop tracks was made in late 80's and there was only few groups/artists that used sampler back then (Kult, Deuer and couple others). And u could say everything about them, just not that they were innovative (or at least, not on a larger, global scale). Also I'm aware, that u might have a different view of Polish hip-hop/rap music, since u don't understand polish lirycs (if I'm wrong correct me) and you can only judge Polish rap by the intrumental/musical side of it.



I didn't said that Polish hip-hop scene is small or non-existent, it's just that for someone like me, who was raised on Kurtis Blow, Cool Herc, Last Poets or Todd Terry, there's not much to search for. And of course, there are few good hip-hop artists, who try to do something different, like Łona, Fisz or Afro Kolektyw, but that's a minority in a deep swamp called Polish hip-hop scene. Referring to Uk hip-hop that u mentioned before, I must admit, that I would give anything, to have our Polish Roots Manuva, Braintax, Jehst or Ty.
