I thought I should introduce myself which seems to be the custom - I signed up and jumped right in....so, my connections with Poland go way, way back to my birth, but after just 4 years, I found myself in a very strange country called Australia.....before I knew it, I was going to school without speaking a word of this weird language called English......all I knew was polish, nevertheless, I topped my classes in English for many years of schooling.....I happily went to polish school from the ages of 7 to 16 (every saturday) and was involved in many polish groups like, singing/dancing/scouts.....there is a thriving polish community here for those of you who are not aware......I visited PL some years ago (late 90's) and intend living there for a while from 2008....I love this website and find it amusing, educational, illuminating, but sometimes it's sad to read the abusive and intolerant postings.......anyway, I was "sernik" as a guest for a while......

Hello. Same thing happened with me in the US. All I knew was Polish, had some integrated classes at first, and now my grades are being tracked by colleges from around the state (Pennsylvania).

Most of my friends feel bad being out-done by a foreign kid in English class who didn't even speak their language until I was like years old.

Lol, WELCOME!!

thanks for the warm welcome.....you were lucky to get extra attention as a migrant child, but when I started school there was not such thing (makes me sound ancient, but I'm not - it's just that it took OZ a long time to recognise such needs at all...you were expected to just get on with it! - which I did)....I realise now, that I have a great facility for languages of any kind (speak French too) an am ready to learn a 4th language, perhaps Czech??

That wouldn't make much sense, considering being able to speak Polish you can understand Czech's almost completely. I would definitely suggest Spanish- one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It will become very useful when travelling, even in the US. You could also try Italian, thats always a fun one to learn. ( plus you can finally undertsand the Pope when he's speaking in Italy in Italian, on TV a lot these days)

Hmm. I can't really think of any others you should really take. But if you want Czech, go ahead, it would definitely be the easiest to learn.

You could try.......Ethiopian. Up for a challenge? lol

yes, I know it's very close to PL and that's why I've chosen it - easy to master....your suggestions about Italian and Spanish reflect my own thoughts - they are both in the same family as French, so the shift would be easy....in the long run, I want to learn an Asian language (given OZ is part of that continent)....Japanese appeals a lot...not in any hurry.....happy to still be able to converse/write in PL (actually, my polish is excellent given I hardly ever use it anymore.....)

Asian cuisine goes way beyond the rice over here - there is Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Japanese (sushi/sashimi are HUGE over here)...not to mention Indian which is very popular.....plus others I've neglected to mention......as for population, I can't quote statistics, but if you walk down the main street of the city of Melbourne, you might see 50% asian to 50% european/english etc......they love it here (so do I, by the way)...
