OK. I can see that point how something on the right may distract your eyes but only because I have just followed Dice's suggestion and googled. I have just looked at say, a dozen forums which are mostly left-sided, but none of which convinced me that left-sided was the way to go.

What I also noticed about some sites with heavy advertisement is that the adverts were lined up down the right hand side, now that was a distraction. So in fact, PF, with it's member info on the right is less distracting than a site with info on the left and a ton of advertising on the right.

Maybe it is the darker colour that drags my eye over there...

Like I said, I have the avatars disabled, but my eye still gravitates that way when I get to the end of a line of text.

Edit:

True, but still distracting. And thanks Admin for not buckling in to having gaudy advertising intershmingled among the posts.

I agree. You can imagine what the site might look like with adverts everywhere...

So if the block colour on the right was the same as the message colour it might not be so distracting? Then there would be no distinguishing between message and member info I guess. Perhaps a lighter colour?

Perhaps, but still not as good as the original layout in my opinion.

However with the current layout the reader can just focus on the content of the message

This is not true, it’s BS actually. It’s well-known fact that the eye will focus on the largest object first, in this case avatar. Since we are used to reading from left to right the only logical and natural placement for it is the left side.

Interesting that this thread is the most discussed item in the FAQ section and (at this point) 3 times more important than the "save the smilies" thread.

ADMIN:
Just face it, you're obviously bored and you need to get yourself a new hobby. You've just made the poster names so small I can only just about read them. 5pt - small enough for everyone? Smaller than the actual text, yet the avatars remain the same size - as distracting for anyone as they ever were! When reading posts, I'm not looking at the avatar, but I do like to know who is posting.

Any more changes you'll be making over the near future? Because it looks like you're just making up your excuses after you've just changed stuff - alteration for no reason other than the fact that you can change it.

your attempts to be different, inovative and new age are laughable, the forum was 'fine' as it was infact more than 'fine'. You just seem to make strange decisions and come up with even stranger reasoning behind it

For the first time in my life I have entirely agreed with Tornado2008.

6pt - That's a little better. I think that might be how it was before.

This right side lay out still drives me crazy, but I'm trying to be a grown up about it and accept change as it happens.

It is actually good to make changes and put your brain and eyes to work.
Just like it it good to take a different route to or from work... It stimulates your brain to learn new intersections, stop lights, turns... :)

It looks that after three days of intensive work the new layout/design is finished. There may still be some small changes (as there are almost every week), but that's about what we were trying to achieve. We hope you like this new, lighter, and more functional (in our view at least) design. Even though it may take some time to get used to.

Thanks for some of your constructive comments, especially today.

It looks okay. *Drops bone*

I'm definately preferring bold text names to highlighted names. Whichever colour it is. I'd prefer it to stick to black (or blue was fine).

I think this thread could be 3x as long as the less serious smiley thread and it wouldn't make a difference, whether it's all been pointless changes or not.

Thanks for listening to our opinions and making the change of layout a little easier to accept with taking into account how we preferred the text for the names.

Admin wanted us to hide the avatars and avoid confrontations.

I mean that now it looks more like a text which is completed by everyone in a row.It is not like a confrontation of avatars etc.

It seems admin did not want that the impressions created by avatars add to the impressions created by the text, sth like that.

If you read a post without concentrating on the name you are more likely to treat the poster with respect. I think.
It doesn't work for me. If someone posts a negative I will still challenge it. And in just as harsh words, if need be.

So you missed everything that's been written in this thread then? It's all been explained but I guess if you'd rather keep re-hashing the same old thing you should continue to repeat yourself in this thread...

Dude thinks it's a lost cause to try and explain over and over. Nothing will ever be perfect. Dude's content. Is what it is.

the new layout is looking good. I like the old layout better but if it absolutely has to go through a change, this one is easier to look at.

Why, because I can deal?Dude's read everything here. It just appears that some people can't get over the fact that they can't be included in any decisions the owner of the site has decided to make.

Dudes eyes were boggled for a few, but it's a minor change that can esaily be dealt with. WYy cry over nothing?

Dude thinks there are much larger problems in life to deal with. It's a discussion forum. Too much energy is wasted on whining.

I personally think people are visual and tend to rely on an avatar to recognize the person who is posting. Even if the name is right above the message we still need to see a picture to really know who it is. And in order to do that we have to go all the way across the page now. I think that's why people are complaining. It was just easier when the avatar was right there, on the left side.

I see what you're saying there but then again, not everyone has an avatar. Some people have them switched off and some people have them only part of the time.

Anyway, it's all done now :)

Because they became an irritation on the right hand side. Meaning that for them the change didn't work.
