New York trip suggestions

so it is confirmed. I have landed the opportunity to go for a long-weekend trip to NY at the beginning of May. I am vary excited, yet, since I haven't visited the city in 10 years, I am looking for suggestions. Things have changes for sure, yet I am flexible and open, so....I know it is gonna be fun. it is a Big apple after all:)

I like art, photography and jazz.

any suggestions local people?

Going to the Museum of Modern Art must be on your list ?

I went there, it was all right, but not what I had expected. The Met is always a popular spot for both art and music. There is also Lincoln Center. For jazz, I am not so sure, NYC isn't really known for jazz (or so I think).

Ground zero is a must see (ex twin towers)

Did they finally let people in/even look at it? I haven't been in that specific area of NY in a few years.

Well the place is so big you can't possibly see the whole thing, and appreciate it, in one visit, so going a few times is nice.

Isn't the Metropolitan Museum in NY also? Or is that another name for the Museum of Modern Art?

Well one girlfriend, and a couple of the girls decided that they can just spill their hearts out to me, so a lot of my day now is being spent listening to their problems over the phone...I'm too nice to say "SHUT THE F*CK UP YOU STUPID C*NT I DONT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS!" to their faces.

Right...umm...well you definitely have to have the pizza. Buy a hotdog from a street vendor...try to get yourself onto "Cash Cab" and possibly get a ticket for Saturday Night Live.

This might not interest you, Miranda, but I'd go visit Yankee Stadium. They're tearing the old girl down after this year and it's one of America's premier sports arenas. Only 6 more months and it will be gone forever.

But I find its best NOT to go sightseeing in NY. I mean there are a few things (the museum of modern art, the metropolitan opera house) but the big apple can be experience in tourist stops. Just walk around Central Park, or Brooklyn. Go into a hole in the wall deli, or movie theater. That's how you see New York.

Hey M, PM me and let me know the dates you will be there.....I have a voucher for a trip I was suppose to take last fall to NYC.....I wouldn't mind going....have a cousin that lives there and she could give me some suggestions....I'll email her about the things for which you are interested:)

Depending on how much doe you have, get a hotel in Jersey City, NJ (right across the river and the commute is good and easy), or somewhere in Mid Town Manhattan. Manhattan is much more convenient (of course) but expect to spend $500+ per night. One of the mid range hotels in Jersey City should set you off by no more than $120 a night.

If you're driving then park the car for however long you are staying there, and get a multiple trip subway pass.

There is a shitload of stuff to see and do in NYC so plan ahead to get the most out of it. Especially if one of the long weekend's day is Monday. Make sure places you want to visit are actually open on those days.

Museums I liked:
53rd St - American Folk Art Museum and Museum of Modern Art
5th Ave. and 42nd Street - New York Public Library
2nd Ave. (downtown) Ukrainian Museum
5th Ave. (upper Manhattan) Guggenheim Museum

No idea about Jazz clubs though. Only concerts I've been to were in Pink Floyd in Madison Square Garden and Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park.

Ma favorite is the museum of natural history. Specially all those mummies give me the creeps...

Perhaps that is true, but I never associated NYC with jazz. Rather the former New Orleans and the cities down south. Maybe a bit more of the northern cities above NYC. Yes, there is a jazz scene in NYC, I don't doubt that.

Oh yea, if you want to go a little bit outside of NYC, there is also Hoboken, NJ where many NYC visitors also go to visit.

Nope. Jazz has nothing to do with the origin of the term.

Ok there are many stories but most people agree prior to the Apple industry wanting to raise profits, Jazz Musicians referred to NYC as the Big Apple.

I think that I like that. I am nt a tourist type in general and while touring Paris with my sister I simply went on my own, since she didn't want to get away from the tour guide (he was very annoying BTW). I had a fabulous time and wished that I had split from the group right at the beginning. I will check the stadium if I have a chance.

Central Park is OK (during the day) but Brooklyn ain't Paris. It even ain't really NYC. Make sure you know where you're going before you take a stroll around Brooklyn ;)

thanks Dariusz. I know what you are saying. I will probably not going to Brooklyn at all, since I am staying in Manhattan. I am not as naive as I might come accross;)
The last time I stayed in Queens, where my car was broken into, even though I left it open as per my host advice in order not to have the locks being damaged( forgot about the glove compartment).

How bad is Brooklyn though. I always wanted to visit? And there are 40 of us so I will not be strolling alone;)

That's where I lived. In Astoria in a Greek-Italian neighborhood so it wasn't that bad. Still, just 10 blocks away things were completely different


I dunno about leaving the car open. Nothing guarantees safety there, so about the only thing you can do is not leave anything in plain sight inside a vehicle. Not even a bag with used coffee cups. They won't know there is nothing of value but you'll still lose one of the cars windows or a lock. The only issue is out of state registration plates. For some reason they will attract burglars.

In all, during 5 years my car was broken into only two times :)
