Yesterday the IIHF confirmed that GKS Tychy will be host for the Group C preliminary round of the 2015 / 16 Continental Ice Hockey Cup. Guests will be Dunarea Galati from Romania and Coventry Blaze from England. Games will take place between 23rd and 25th of October at the "Stadion Zimowy". Very good opportunity for GKS Tychy and Polish Ice Hockey in general to present themselves on the international stage, particularly with Coventry Blaze not necessarily being a nobody in Ice Hockey.

Would have made for a good thread in the sports category of this forum........if there was such a thing.

The draw for the Champions and Europa League qualification took place today. Lech Poznan will meet FK Sarajevo in the 2nd round of the CL qualifier. Slask Wroclaw will face NK Celje (Slovenia) and Jagiellonia Białystok will meet with FK Kruoja Pakruojis (Lithuania) in the first round of Europa League qualification. I would post some pictures of my visit to the stadium in Wroclaw for the game but it does not really fit into the Ekstraklasa thread. If only there was a sports category.......

Merged: "Magic" speedway champion of Poland 2015!!!

Maciej Janowski has won the title of Individual Speedway Champion of Poland 2015. He did that winning one race (the final). He ended up second in every heat he took part in on his way to Gran Finale :)

Merged: Any absorbing sports in Poland worth watching?

I feel sorry for you Poles. Watching the Ashes. Google for it. It's called cricket.

Do you actually have any sports worth watching? Not on a wind-up.......
eh?

ladies beach volleyball.

Old news: CMHL: Silver medals to the Polish Hussars!

Polish Hussars played in the final of Canadian Multicultural Hockey League once again. It's either third or fourth time in a row. This year we lost to the Irish but the silver medal is, nevertheless, quite a success. If we had the kind of support in the stands that the Irish did, I'm sure boys would have put up a better fight.

any sports worth watching?

Plenty of sports worth watching in Poland. Handball, Volleyball, Speedway ....... all sports the Poles are pretty good at and the atmosphere is usually quite good.

Football is not that great in my opinion. That said, Slask Wroclaw and Jagiellonia Białystok progressed to the second round of Europa League qualification on Thursday evening. Jagiellonia trashed their opponents Kruoja Pakruojis (Lithuania) 8:0. Unfortunately I picked the wrong game to go to and went to see Slask Wroclaw. But even their 3:1 over NK Celje was quite good.

Poland. Handball, Volleyball, Speedway

There is some cricket, but not much and not at a high level - I've never found a place where I can watch from the pavillion spending the whole afternoon downing G&T and cucumber sandwiches :-)

The same for bowls - never seen a green here.

Having said that, the racing at Sluzewiec is a great bargain - no need to join and go in the further stand, the first one is great and everything cheap as chips. Funny when they put Afghan hounds on at the end of the meet for a bit of fun - must be a Polish thing!

Ice Speedway is particularly mental and worth watching - they even held it on a lake one year in Poznań, which must clearly be the definition of "are you off your head?".

Not quite in Poland, but Ski Flying in Harrahov is worth watching live. There's something insane about jumping the length of two football fields on snow.

The Tour de Pologne will be soon, and Stage 1 will be in Warsaw - tourdepologne.pl/en/stage1/ - although the route isn't very inspiring.

Doug, sounds like you just bought a 55" ultra hd tv. Its the sort of question that arises in that sort of happy situation. Of course also useful when scrutinising beach volleyball tactics on replay

Have you been following me eh? ? Lol. "Scutinising" is a verb that can get an old boy the nonce title. I do watch the girl athletes for just a minute or two on the beach but then fortunately the dog drags me away :)

Cracking stuff this Polish summer - but not as good as the English cricketing summer :( Back there on retirement :)

Maciej Janowski has won the Speedway Grand Prix round in Latvia (Daugavpils). The meeting has been cancelled after 20 heats(just before semifinals) due to heavy rain.

Grats "Magic"!!!

Poland got Romania, Denmark, Montenegro, Armenia and Kazakhstan in the World Cup 2018 qualifier. Any thoughts? Judging by how well Poland is doing at the moment, i think they will go to Russia for the tournament.

Yes and the fact that he defeated an arrogant Serbian "follower of religion of peace" makes it even more enjoyable :-)

I was so excited after the knockdown that I spilled the beer LOL

Poles have taken the throne of best hammer throwers in the World. Anita Włodarczyk (world record holder and the first and only woman in history to surpass 80 meter mark) has destroyed the competition in Beijing taking gold by throwing the hammer further than 80 meters twice in the final. Second place was 5 meters behind. There was actually no competition for Anita.

Paweł Fajdek has won the gold medal in men hammer defending the title of World Champion. Wojciech Nowicki won the bronze.

In the medal classification Poland is currently 3rd behind Jamaica and the US making it one of the strongest countries in the World in athletics.

So ooo ooo proud! :D

Not really. Poland is 5th (which is still really good).
iaafbeijing2015.com/special/iaaf_medaltable_en
And the leader of that "ranking" (actually table, not ranking) is... Kenya, surprisingly (but kinda cool!).
Six medals for Poland so far, and I hope there are more to come ;)

Merged: The potato eaters vs the krauts

Who's winning? Normally I'm with Poland, but the krauts should stuff you lot 6-0. Wishing for a good game.

Oh dear - just as I typed this...............that didn't take long.

2-0 game over. Showing the true gulf between these sides.

In the meantime - for football fans and non-internet trolls, who are away from the match on ITV4......

Germany are too swift and nifty, and would be absolutely destroying England by now. At least the Polish coach didn't tell his players that they could possibly win the European Championship, as Hodgson infamously told his England players they could.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lewandowski :))))

Lewandowski playing a blinder. 1 on 1 with the keeper. World class save, then has a shot cleared off the line.

But Germany are practically playing with 10 men and will take Can off at the break (now - 2-1 to the Krauts).

Poland v England for the Egg Cup. Now that would be worth watching.

Poland need to gamble here and push Piszek up the wing to do a Gareth Bale. The Krauts will change to 4-4-2 to tighten it up and Lewandowski wont get a sniff if he's forced to play up there on his own, as I fear the second half may well pan out. So Poland have to go for it, not play on the counter.

Fears unfounded so far. Poland making progress down the left. Comes across to Lewandowski who shoots into the ground. It's a good game, but a third Germany goal will kill it off of course.

Now the change... sub for Germany 4-2-3-1, Poland 4-4-2

Germany hit the post, went very close twice, as did Poland.

Piszek injured, and didn't realise he was off at half time :( His potential attacking play is missed, but Poland are more solid. They have done very well indeed and surprised me with their willingness to go forward.

3-1 - Goetze just too good. All three of the goals were avoidable sadly.

good luck to english trying spell her name.

What's so difficult about Jędrzejczyk? :D

Anyway, she's a hell of a striker, but she doesn't have much in the way of grappling skills. Might be her downfall if there's anyone at 115 that can wrestle, but her striking is so good that no-one might want to get close enough. That cut that she gave Jessica Penne was just brutal. I'm actually hoping that she encourages other women into MMA in Poland.

Rousey on the other hand is just ridiculous. She's able to outwrestle anyone in her division, she's got a pretty heavy punch and she just doesn't back down. She's genuinely scary!

nothing? i never heard any ring announcer able to spell her name,no where near properly.

yep..rarely seen any woman able to punch technically so sound.she throw punches like pro boxer.

rondas striking is awfull.she might be strong, but she doesnt do it properly...way to open and messy.
as for wrestling, yea, shes a beast.her mum was first US woman to win Olympics in judo.she wads bronze medalist in judo...shes hot girl as well.

What got me in the Penne fight was that you could see that she was throwing punches at all angles - like you say, like a pro boxer. She seems to have a huge amount of distance with her kicks as well, so if she could just sort out some decent wrestling training...

I don't think she really has to do it properly to be honest - the sheer power is enough. I almost get the impression that she was only using strikes to keep people interested. What she did in the Correia fight was just for show really - she could've just armbarred her and ended it easily.
