Do not build up the cult of Katyń. This should be the last loud celebration of the anniversary of the massacre – says award-winning British historian of polish descent Adam Zamoyski.

NEWSWEEK: Each anniversary of the Katyń massacre is observed with a true religious devotion, the very holy of holies of the tragic polish metrology of the 20th century. This is partly because we foster the feeling of being deceived by the west at the start of the WWII. Can western policy of passivity during the invasion of Poland be considered a betrayal?

That's the very first question asked. You can read the full version of the article here:

If we are to accept that the EU is predicated on solidarity and repairing the damage of WWII, constantly invoking Katyń will only serve to undermine the process and serve as a harsh reminder of old wounds.

I'm against it too. Yes, remember by all means but move on. We are one century ahead now.

the tragic polish metrology of the 20th century

I think you quoted yourself there, Adam. With all due respect, you seem to misunderstand martyrdom. That came earlier in Polish history, fending/staving off external threats. After WWII came the victim complex, not martyrdom. Like it or not, it's a large part of the so-called Polish spirit.

Interesting:

....
These grievances relate to very ancient times. - Not necessarily. I do not think only of the Polish-Lithuanian siege of Moscow in 1612, but also a Polish participation in Napoleon's army in 1812. When I was working on my book about this period - the "War with Russia '- I was very surprised by the extent to which Russians feel betrayed by the filthy Poles, who walked with such enthusiasm, with an army of Napoleon. And so it was just murdered the Polish prisoners of war, because many can forgive the French, but they could not forgive the same Slavs, Poles. Hence, the Poles in 1612, after Moscow and burned churches profaned. Of course, every nation sees the story as it is learned.
We remember partitions, uprisings, Siberia, and the Katyn massacre of Prague - some of these events presented by the Polish books without authorization discussion. The books we see only the Russian propaganda.
But we must acknowledge that the prospect of Russia is very different. They remember us appropriation of Kievan Rus, the invasion of Russia and the burning of the Kremlin and the eternal attempts to use the West to weaken Russia. And after World War II, the Russians still live in the sense that the world thanks to their victims managed to win the war with Hitler. They claim that they liberated Poland and the Poles still only their spit, and constantly complaining....

Again, every people has it's own version of history!

I see the difference between the victim complex on the one hand and martyrdom, sacrifice and self-immolation on the other. I have only translated a part of the article and didn't express any opinion of my own, so I am not haunted by the polish spirit.

Thanks for clearing that up :) Katyń is really being used as a political tool in the interests of international relations at the moment. Rampant opportunism but sensibly motivated truth seeking which I like :0
