Bad news for beer-lovers in Poland (beer prices going up)

Poor weather (a dry spring and rainy harvest period) has harmed the barley crop making it 30%-35% more expensive than a year ago, and that will affect beer prices, Carlsberg Poland procurement official Pawł Rudawski said. The growing cost of fuel and energy as well as glass bottles will also affect beer prices. Some may go up already this year, whilst other producers may wait till QI of 2012.

Exactly. Anybody who's been to Poland recently will be impressed with how the choice of beer has increased.

woopie.. I'm sure a domestic beer is still almost universaly ordered throughout Polish bars and clubs by Poles. I pretty sure a small 0.33ml Heineken still cost much more than a 0.5ml Warka or Zywiec.

Given that pricing like that would be contrary to Grupa Zywiec rules, I very much doubt that it will. Although frankly anybody who orders Zywiec when there is another beer on offer is a moron.

I don`t drink German beers. They are so tasteless. Yuk. The difference in cost doesn`t matter to me, it is about taste.

in january of this year, i paid around 6zl for domestic, 8 for Heineken. it was always more expensive. i can't speak for prices today but over the 4 years I was there, this was the case. about a 25% higher cost for Heineken.

Heineken is made in the same brewery as they own Zywiec.

lol. German beer is good stuff. I'd rate it higher than Polish beer. There is more variety when it comes to German beer, and the same is with Belgian and Czech beer. That being said, I still like Polish beer though, and Zywiec porter and Warka strong is great :)

It probably won't matter much to die-hard Polish beer lovers. They may have to cut down on their food consumption, in order to afford the higher beer cost.

i don't think the rising beer prices will make any difference in consumption.

in 1997, a pack of cigarettes in the USA was about $2. people used to say, "when the price gets to $3, I'm gonna quit." well, the feds raised taxes on cigarettes and by 1999, the price was at $3. now, it's about $7 in the suburbs, NYC it's around $10....and people just go right on smoking.

drinking is a huge part of polish culture, the beer drinkers will keep drinking regardless.

cigarettes are consumed by nicotine addicts
and the increase in tobacco prices went across the board
you didn't suddenly see a load of people smoking pipes as the price of snouts went up

Alkies on the other hand do not have to drink beer

recreational beer drinker may cut down
or drink at home, or get loaded on cheap carry outs before hitting the clubs

beer drinkers across the country are not going to suddenly switch to vodka because a beer costs them another 70 groszy. they'll find the money to buy it, just like they found the money to buy that pack of ciggies that costs 1zl more than last year.

which is what they already do, only now, they'll pay a little more for the carry outs and then a little more at the clubs.

do you think the hundreds of thousands of college students in poland are going to just give up beer as a result of this price increase? as if they sat down when they were 18 and said to themselves, "you know....i was considering just not drinking but.....Warka is 2.80 at Carrefour right now.....i mean......if it goes up to 3.60 or higher, that's it! i'll give up beer drinking forever! I've got a budget to follow you know!"

lastly, let's not forget what your mind is like by the time you get to the club after pregaming. you're not going to nickel and dime when you're half in the bag on a saturday night. 7zl, 7.50, 8, 8.50.....whatever, pour me another one. we're talking about drinking, right?

The price of beer is not determined by the price of grain alone. The large brewer's will have hedged most of their needs for up to 3 or 5 years ahead, maybe a year for fuel. Of course price of beer will increase for Euro 2012, but it is the retailers who will increase the price.

The Irish mbassy have a happy hour Mon to Fri 5 to 7 with 500ml of beer for 5zl. Lets hope they keep it.

Sorry, I don`t see it in shops. Beer prices are the same, and when there is a promotion, you can buy very cheap beer. Not the best but good enough to have fun.

Neither do I. I pay 2.50 zl for Amber Naturalny in my local shop. I don't expect it to change during Euro 2012.
