Beware of "Nigerian scam" based on polish airplane crash

This is scam e-mail I received today

Dear Friend

I am Jozef Kuczynski a solicitor at law. I was the personal Attorney to Late Piotr Nurowski, 64 years of age, made a fixed deposit (Certificate of Deposit) of fund valued at USD$12,500,000.00 (Twelve Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) with a Finance Company here in Europe and unfortunately lost his life a plane crash , Ref: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8626683.stm

He left no clear beneficiary as Next of Kin except some vital documents related to the deposit still in my possession. Recently, the financial company contacted me asking for the next of kin to the funds or funds may be declared to the government as unclaimed.

Upon a clear and legitimate agreement with you, I seek your consent to present you as the next of kin, so that my late client's funds will not be confiscated by the Financial Authority.

You will be entitled to 40% of the total fund, 50% for me while 10% is to be marked out for any expenses that will be incurred during the clearance process of transfer of the fund to your bank account. Be informed that there is no risk involved as all necessary legal documents that will be used to back you up as the legal beneficiary and next of kin of my late client will be procured.

I get dozens of emails like that every week. Anyone who is stupid enough to fall for this scam deserves to be scammed. >^..^< M-G (nuff said)

Yes Stu, unfortunately a lot of them scammers are based in NL. Dutch police arrests loads of them, but only from time to time. Then they escape to Norway. >^..^< M-G (and you'll get a +47... number)

Oh the "nigerian" is a reference only i'm pretty sure its done by white native Dutch, my friend got mugged by them when he was in NL, he told me he never saw a worst dump where people can beat you up for a dollar. NL is a relatively rich country so it must be the people ...

Rich Dutch ppl stealing from a poor Pole. I find that very hard to believe. It's the mythical "friend" again. I am sure if he got beaten up, he deserved it.

Edit: he must've beaten up by Poles then, since they commit the most crimes in NL.

There's 16 million people in NL, most of them Dutch but also a lot of Indonesians, Turks, Moroccans, muslims of all kinds and Poles, who are only a tiny minority, still commit the most crimes in NL? They're getting less indeed, but I still get them on a very regular basis. Don't know why that is; I never leave my email address at guestbooks, fora or any other public place on Inet, as that is how they get their addresses. Guess they have some sort of database which they exchange. And in fact, I seem to remember having read sth about that.

Wow, and I thought people couldn't reach any lower... This is an email I received earlier this morning. To make things even more "interesting" the address it was sent from ends with a .ru. Granted, there are scumbags all over the world but this is pretty disgusting in my view...

It looks like a pretty standard Nigerian scam only customized to the plane crush. Many naive people responded and wired money to scammers like this in the past, especially when it was big a decade ago or so. I've got this type of emails too.

I use web emails (Yahoo & gmail) for my 'junk' needs i.e. subscriptions, shopping, forwarded chain letters or jokes. Many people do not delete their friends email addresses thus feeding the spammers. That's why both web addresses attract a lot of spam and gmail much more than yahoo.

I use my IP providers email address for friends and family only and if I get a single spam email a week that's a lot! :)
