Roadside Crosses Taxed

Gdansk Municipal Council passed a tax on roadside crosses – a daily newspaper "Gazeta Wyborcza" says.
Over the decades, more than 55 thousand drivers, passengers and pedestrians died on Polish roads.
Relatives of many of them erected the roadside memorial crosses. They are illegal, because in the road reserve only signs may be placed, and other objects need to have permission.
Gdansk Municipal Council just passed a law that allows crosses to be taxed. Daily rate of tax is PLN 1 per square meter of land the cross occupies. In exchange, the cross becomes legal. Already existing crosses will not be removed or taxed.

Not sure how I feel about this.

This will cost much more to administer and police than the revenue raised. A bit of lateral thinking would have been much better, e.g. allowing only a simple, biodegradable wooden cross.

Or possibly just making the prat who caused the accident stand there and hold a memorial for 12 hours per day for a month.

it might be that the person who caused the accident is the victim.

also, i would simply limit the size and type of cross/memorial to a particular standard.

I was thinking the same. If they did put the victim there it would certainly slow traffic down.
