Electronics v stadium hooligans to be implemented by Polish authorities

Polish authorities plan to clamp electronic bracelets on known stadium hooligans to prevent incidents during Euro 2012. The bracelets will enable police to monitor the thugs' whereabouts. Their attempt to enter a stadium or destroy the bracelet carries a 3-year jail sentence. It's about time something was done about the footie slime who have made it dangerous for dads to take sons to matches or for entire families to attend.

Will Poland be able to control the Polish hooligans during the Euro 2012?

It was stated in 2006 that the current football hooliganism in Poland is far worse than the dark days of English football hooliganism in the 1980s, with nearly every Polish professional football club having a fan base rooted in hooliganism. A match between local Warsaw rivals, Polonia and Legia in April 2006 saw over 1,300 riot police, armed with CS gas and rifles with rubber bullets fail to control 3,000 fans. Instead of keeping the two sets of fans apart, the police shepherded them all into the city centre where running battles ensued. A common feature of Polish hooligans is also ambushing rival fans then stealing their scarves and flags, before tying them to railings in the stadium and set on fire.

But, from what I hear, it's a differetn story withPolonia and Legia in Warsaw, Lech in Poznań and the seacoast teams.

Can't talk for elsewhere, but Lech are very proactive with stamping out hooliganism - every single person in the stadium needs to have a PESEL associated with their seat, and ID documents are checked against the PESEL on the ticket at the time of entry.

The system pretty much ensures that anyone causing trouble is identified and banned without much delay. I'm of the opinion that every single game in the top two leagues in Poland should have the same system.

I am sure that they will be implementing a control order in place for any of the hooligans activity if you will, that could occur, as this is regarded as a Major event and the repercusions for Poland globally could have a very negative impact as with any Major event like the UEFA 2012 it is not about those in attendance in the country but what gets broadcast across all media platforms, the UEFA games will not only bring about a legacy to Poland (and the Ukraine) in the terms of things put into place following the games for instance infrastructure wise but more often than not will have economic, social and regeneration prospects that come from hosting this type of event.

It is likely that policing and security at all the games will be heightened and this would have been an addressed issue at the start of the early stages of planning to stage this event in Poland and would have been covered in their bid put forward to the UEFA body how they would tackle this sort of behaviour.

rybnik: what's a PESEL? Something like a Social Security number in the US, only more so. It is an acronym of: Powszechny Elektroniczny System Ewidencji Ludności Every ID card has one, and it is often used when filling in forms.
