According to the 2010 budget, road construction expenses were to total zł.38.6 billion in 2011 and zł.33.3 billion in 2012. Daily Rzeczpospolita reports, though, that Warsaw is now looking to cut zł.19 billion from the 2011-2012 budget. It will still be more money spent than ever before just less than hoped.

I wouldn't trust the figures here at all, PennBoy. They'd love us to all believe that they are dipping deep into the coffers to address perennial problems due to their increased revenue through tax. There is much distortion but this isn't strictly a Polish phenomenon, of course.

Whether the figures are correct or not the faster the motorways and expressways are built the better. I know much has changes in the last 20 years, but for a central European country to have roads like that or major cities not having a metro, is embarrassing. Roads, airports, railways built investors will come.

True, one is a corollary of the other. Modernisation cannot be done on the cheap and cuts across the board. Spending now will likely be recouped in the future due to 2012 :)

I wholeheartedly agree, I would only add that embarrassment is not the real issue but Poland's economic future, to a large degree, depends on it's infrastructure.

I hope your figures are wrong, I saw this thread last night but I had nothing to add, still nothing but my opinion I suppose.

I don't like the fact that the Chinese are building roads and doing in for much less, you can't cut corners without a price, in this case quality. I thought the whole purpose of the European Union was for the countries to stick together and help one another like through announcing tenders and letting an EU company win the contract.

That's certainly not the whole purpose, PB. You are describing CCT, a hallmark of Thatcher's 1980's Britain. In the EU, you go with where the business is but CCT doesn't solely determine that. The Chinese are just cheaper labour and perhaps a roundabout way of increasing partnership there.

It looks like a fancy drag racing track :) :) I hope they can pull off style with practicality as Poland is crying out for that.

In Ireland we had a growing industry and sh1t roads, now we have wonderful motor-ways and a fleeing industry.

There are some great new roads being made in Poland....I just hope they are as good as they look...and have not been made with cheap labour and sub standard materials...

I see what you're saying but it's just that part of it that looks like that because it's so straight and has the grass in between and on the sides of the road looking like race track, look at the same road S8 just north of Warsaw.

Right! This change was long in coming and I fear that certain regions will take precedence over others. The roads are in a sorry state here and that's the main reason I spent 3 days in hospital. I lost concentration, then couldn't brake in time for a big hole. I hope local MPs do their jobs and report on the seriousness of the situation.

Sorry to hear that. Once they build good surfaced smooth dual carriageways with barriers on the sides, no intersections or pedestrian crossings the roads should be alot safer. Another thing everyone wants roads like that but no one wants them running near their homes, residents are also slowing down progress.

It's one thing when the people laugh at the state of the roads but it's quite another when the govt does it too ;)

Personally, I'd much rather see dwindling funds be spent on upgrading rail lines and services. In the long term it will prove to be a much better investment. Why waste money repeating the mistakes of others? Perhaps there is a better thread for continuing that discussion. The ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) age is drawing to a close. Why should Poland bother attempting to look like 1990 America? Just skip over it and move on!

PPP Private Public Partnership to pay for the last section of the Warsaw-Kukuryki A2 motorway to the Belorussian border, with the government paying back the loan over 20 years?
