Freezing weather in Poland, 42 people dead in winter freeze... and no-one cares?

Apparently 29 people died in PL this weekend due to the cold. And looking out of my window, it's a day to stay at home.

Twenty-nine people have frozen to death throughout Poland during the weekend's bitter cold wave that has dropped temperatures to minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The latest deaths brought to 71 the number of people who have died from the cold in Poland since early December.

It was -22 in Gdańsk this morning :)
But they say it's going to change soon. Before Christmas we'll have temperatures above 0 again.
I'm not sure if I should be happy... Now it's endurable, with no wind and not so humid air. When the rain starts again the weather will be even worse than now. And the snow - another Christmas without it :(

Most of the people who have died do not have a home....If there is a homeless person near you , take em a can of hot soup...you might save somebodies life...?

I read somewhere that some local governments are seeking out such people to offer them shelter , but i don,t know if they have a Salvation army type organisation that deals with such people..?

There's the Red Cross, the Wielki Orchiestr and Caritas, but they're all severely stretched at this time of year.

It's very cold in the UK too at present.

Warsaw is showing minus 4C at present, I'm in the North West Uk and we are minus 3 just now, at 9p.m. It's getting colder as well so I expect the temperature to dip a few degrees over the next few hours.

We have snow, lots and lots of it and lots of black ice.


Winter with a vengeance? Or maybe we all just forgot what Winter is really like as we have had milder winters over the last few years.

Dead simply because they had nowhere to go.

I know its unfashionable but does that not concern anyone else?

We are prepared to throw inordinate sums of cash on Euro2012 and countless European projects, but we cant manage to get homeless people off the streets a week before Christmas?

In Russia, I accept this. The state doesnt care. But Poland? Why people must die?

42 people die in an accident and it would be a day of mourning.. these people will barely get a centimetres of newsprint...

Hopefully the cold snap will end soon. I've heard of such snaps to the north, though, I'm a bit too south for them. Everyone should stay inside until the cold snap ends!

Apparently, cold weather is more lethal than swine flu.

And yea, no one cares. Everyone is too caught up in the holiday credit-a-thon that is christmas. Ah people spending money that they don't have on crap they can't afford.

But seriously, this happens EVERY YEAR. Apparently in the most righteous catholic country in Europe, the most people end up freezing to death on the street. 180 died over the winter of 2005-2006.

This was the headline in the Kiev Post today.

It seems that most baltic and central European countries suffer this problem, especially with the homeless. A great shame.

They have a place to go, there are many Social Services Centres where the homeless can stay, but there's one condition: they mustn't drink alcohol.Many of them choose to drink over a bed and even a meal and stay on freezing cold.

Things may have changed in the last 3 months, but the last time I was catching an overnight train from wa-wa cen i came across a 14 homeless old people, by the dilpidated toilets.

No vodka bottles in hand, 60:40 women, clutching their few items. No-one chooses to sleep outside a railway toilet, so please spare, me the middle class waffle. Such a pitful sight I last saw in Moscow backstreets.

Nonsense. They didn't want to go to the shelters for homeless because they can't drink there.

What do you want to do with them ? Lock them every winter ? In vast majority of cases these people choose their way of life, It is their life. They want to live like sh*t, so don't expect us to cry over them.

The poor, sick, eldery can just look out for themselves...

Most shelters are full in the winter, so many homeless people must stay on the streets even if they don't want to. It's a shame that there is not enough places even for those who are not very drunk and behave well.

The first step should be to help them break their addiction, this is the key to everything. If they don't want this, there is not much we can do.

All people who really want to start a new life should get that help. Also society will save a lot of money if they help these people.

Apparently it's not working. Homeless people are freezing to death. Could you do a better job with the money? Something local? Could you setup and run a shelter with all the money that you dump the governments way? Could you help out some people that are down on their luck with medical care? I bet you could. In fact, without a middleman, I'm pretty sure you could get way more out of your money than the government could.

The thing is, if you were in charge of distributing the money...would you spend it on corporate welfare? How about pet projects? would you send your soldiers to play in the desert?

The concept of the government using tax money to take care of people is a noble one, but it ultimately fails in its application.

for a 3000/mo brutto salary...

3600 starts at the employer, by the time it gets to the employees bank account, they've got 2100 sitting in there. Then of course comes VAT@22%.

If the company managed to make any money, it is taxed at 19%... and if you're paid dividends on the whatever is left, that's another 19%.

Could you make better use of the money than the government? I think I could. I think a cage full of baboons could.

I've got a better question, does it concern you? I mean to say, if you see a homeless guy or girl.. Would you offer that person a place for the night? (I know you can't help the whole world, but you can start in your own community if necessary!)

I share your sentiments. Some people actually have billions on their private bank accounts, and they keep everything to themselves, while people who had some bad luck (And those people could've been you and me aswell!) die outside because they're an inconvenience to society?

That's because in this wonderful society of ours, someone doesn't count when he or she doesn't generate wealth for the people who already have millions. I'm sure these people can see reason? I'm sure they're able to understand that they will easily make it through another winter with a little less money? I mean, what does it matter? You have 5 million today, and maybe you'll have 4,9 million tomorrow. (Either way, you'll have more than enough?)

I mean, saving another person's life is priceless? I don't know how many rich people read things on the internet, but it's always worth a shot. I mean, I can make a difference for maybe one or two persons, but I know some people could literally save half the globe with the money and the resources they have.

My opinion? If we as all people, want to call this society of ours civilized, together we should make damn sure poverty doesn't exist anymore. For no one, regardless who's fault it is, or was..

That's my Christmas wish.

Sometimes I wonder if everyone has been around homeless people in big cities. Did you know some homeless absolutely REFUSE to go to shelters? You cannot make someone go to a shelter who absolutely won't go.

Volunteers from shelters will go out and tell everyone about the shelter and hand out brouchures so people will know it's there and some people would rather just stay on the streets. I've seen it. Some people live in homeless camps with tents and everything and would rather be there than in a shelter.
