An Israeli couple have been given suspended jail sentences in Poland for the theft of artefacts from the Nazi death camp Auschwitz, officials say.

You can understand their doing that but the museums and artefacts are for all kinds of nationals to observe. It's in the collective interest of humanity to see such things. Theft is theft and they denied other people the chance of seeing whatever it is they stole.

it's not clear to me, if they opened a display case and took the items or actually knew where to find hidden items.

I'm just shocked they received sentences, I thought Jews get away with everything these days.

The Polish authorities will prosecute anyone if they feel it is the right thing to do. You cannot let people off for theft, it's just not on. They even admitted their guilt so what did they expect?

To some extent, perhaps. However, Poland cannot afford to lay a dangerous precedent here. They admitted they were in the wrong. Then again, so did those Mossad guys on 9/11 who said they were there to "document the event".

Perhaps a slap on the wrist? We should acknowledge their anger given the magnitude of the situation but they have strung this out for all too long.

Some sensitivity/tact was likely employed by the Polish authorities. The current govt is friendly to the Israelis.

it's the first i've heard of this story. it might be that the shame this couple have brought upon themselves is enough. i can't imagine them getting good press.

I heard that it was a Swede and a Pole that stole the 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign. There should have been a tightening of security thereafter. If the object that was stolen mattered so much to them, they could have asked.

"Suddenly, when we stopped next to the display box, we saw six or seven artifacts lying on the ground, covered in mud. I picked them up and tried to figure out what they were. "

There are probably the most obviously fake guard towers in recorded history, those are fairly sh*t.

Are you sure you don't need any guard towers? I can build you some which are precisely as authentic as the ones at Auschwitz II.

I didn't see any silverwear, was too busy laughing at the guard towers.

lols,quite........Its in Warsaw, somewhere near Wola I think, was taken there by a mate so just followed like a puppy TBH :)
And ,HHhhhmmm, yesssssssss ,"just lying around", sounds plausable,I mean, when I went to Auschwitz I, I found a minty Walther P38 just behind the toilet block when I sneaked off for a cigarette......

Must say though, reading about people being stopped at the airport for having tiny bits of Barbed wire allegedly from Auschwitz does sound like a bit of a banana republic revenue raising scam............how the hell do you prove where they found the wire? Ive gone through Polish airports with bags stuffed full of historical artifacts (legaly purchased or given as gifts) and never once been stopped, maybe because I fly LOT rather than El Al?

You know that even legally purchased historical stuff can not be taken out of Poland without permission? And yes destination matters,I was never strip searched on any airport except for one time when I flew from Quito, Ecuador to WAW.

You know we are very poor in Poland so every penny counts.
