Ten-year-old Karina Karwowska, who went missing for six days and was eventually found by police in north-east Poland, has had her toes amputated after frostbite left her feet gangrenous.
The girl is currently undergoing an operation in the Hyperbaric Medical Centre in the Baltic city of Gdynia, where doctors are trying to save her left foot after having to amputate her other toes.
After the operation, ten-year-old Karina still awaits more hyperbaric treatment as well as possible surgery. She is expected to stay in hospital for a number of weeks.
The girl, who suffers from epilepsy, first went missing earlier this month after she had gone mushroom picking near her home in Rzepiski, near Augustow in north-east Poland.
Karina was found by a passing driver on National Road 8, after police spent three days searching for her, even suspecting that she might have been kidnapped or murdered.
When rescued, Karina was found to be severely dehydrated, with doctors finding as many as sixteen ticks on her body. She was also found to be suffering from severe frostbite. from the news.pl
In addition to having been born epileptic, Karina came from a poor family with reported alcohol problems. We've decided to try and brighten up this little girls life a bit by taking donations. We're talking with child services in Gdynia to discuss what would be the most effective way to use the donations. If you'd like to support Karina, you can donate by bank transfer (please send Torq a PM) or by credit card/paypal using the link below.
