The 2nd Wisła Polish Film Festival in Moscow, under teh honorary patroange of Vladimir Putin, introduced Russian audiences to the below-mentioned recent Polish films. Conspicuously absent from the line-up was Andrzej Wajda's "Katyń". The official reason given was some snag involving distribution rights in Russia. (Tell it to the horse marines!)

1. Bezmiar sprawiedliwości

2. Boisko bezdomnych

3. Braciszek

4. Cztery noce z Anną

5. Jasne błękitne okna

6. Krótka histeria czasu

7. Kto nigdy nie żył

8. Lejdis

9. Ogród Luizy

10. Parę osób mały czas

11. Pora umierać

12. Ranczo Wilkowyje

13. S@motność w sieci

14. Sztuczki

15. Testosteron

16. To nie tak jak myślisz kotku

17. Wszyscy jesteśmy Chrystusami

18. Wszystko będzie dobrze

Very nice event.

Katyń licence for Russia has been bought by Boris Berezovsky, he lives in London, he hates Putin and he has rejected Katyń on this festival.

The situation is strange. The rights to distribute the film were bought by Russian New Media Distribution Company owned by Wladimir Gusinski. According to the contract, the film was supposed to appear on at cinemas by the end of 2008. It hasn`t so far.
Only Polish cultural institutions in Russia show the film.

I don't know if there's any room for joy but I am really glad about the recent step of Russian government which hopefully prelude thaw in our relationship and reveal the truth officially even if it hurts. The "Katyń" has been finally given a green light on the state-owned channel "Kultura" at prime-time. It was represented today first time on Russian TV at 19.50 with a following afterword where Russian historians, politicians and a producer discussed the piece of art. Thankfully everyone came to terms on that it wasn't antirussian and it's vital for our relationship to know the truth, not to hide it. Let's wait for the governmental actions. ;)

It was shown on Russian state TV today.

Katyń pokaże dziś rosyjska telewizja państwowa. Katyń będzie można obejrzeć na kanale telewizyjnym Kultura w godzinach największej oglądalności.

I would write it "Zdrawstwujtie", but it's my "Polish way" of writing it ;)

It's late and I'm not sure I'd be able to translate it into English... Maybe Sasha will do this tomorrow? ;)

Sasha, I wonder if you could tell us something about opinions of your compatriots concerning Katyn massacre (and the film, if anyone has seen it)? I'd really like to know what ordinary, normal people think about it...

i`m not surprised that Russians want to normalize relations with Poles, starting from Katyn episode. We live in time of globalization and survivor of Slavs as civilization is endangered. If Poles and Russians fails to coordinate once again, Slavic world is lost. Actually, there is a lot of signals from both sides that suggests batter relations to be only solution in this historical moment.

Paulina, Grunwald, Crowy hey guys! The reaction is diifferent as it always happens. The Russian comment represented by Paulina was pretty shallow and I would say uneducated example of how things are among Russians.
But the problem is that many simply had known either nothing or too little about those horrible events and the film thereby was a good chance to eliminate those gaps in one's knowledge and to comprehend that stalin's agression was sometimes indeed unpredictable and could affect people abroad the SU. For us it was important to see that it wasn't solely Russian tragedy and whatever they say the film is uniting since it makes you feel like victims of Soviet slaugthering in Katyn was our common tragedy.
The afterword was really surprising. No one tried to deny the fact of mass killing (what I personally expected from Kosachev, the head of International Affairs Committee and putin's yes-man). By the way, it was kind of new to learn from Russian historians that there were also 1000s Soviet citizens shot there at the same time. The question "why" that happened to those Polish officers however still stays unsolved.
P.S. Nice they showed it at Holy Week.

In a very interesting interview to DZIENNIK GAZETA PRAWNA (April 2 - April 5), Władimir Pribyłowski, historian, dissident in the times of the USSR, at present the director of the Russian "Panorama" Information-Research Center, biographer of Vladimir Putin, answers question of this newspaper on the subject:
-------------------
- Tonight, the Russian TV channel KULTURA is going to show the film "Katyń". So far, the subject has been controversial for the Russian authoities. Do we see a change of attitude now?

- Such a conclusion is simply too far-reaching. As far as I can remember the film has already been shown on one of the Russian cable channels, but it was in the middle of the night.

- Now it is prime time, at 19.50 of the Moscow time.

- Yes, but this channel has a very small audience. In some simplified terms, it is a channel for retired lady teachers. [...] However, he showing of this film on KULTURA is a symptom of rationalism, but on the other hand, there is nothing of a breakthrough in it ...

- Some days later, Putin as a first Russian leader in history will take part in the celebrations commemorating the events in Katyń. The film will perhaps be seen by no one, but as every Russian information programme starts with the news on what Putin and Medvedev were doing on a particular day, such an event must break itself through to a massive audience ...

- Of course, this will be a major political event. Apparently, Vladimir Putin needs Poland for something.

- For what?

- That thing, it is a secret of the Kremlin. [...]

Hmmm very interesting

Considering Tsarist Russia didn't even want to hear about RECOGNITION of the Polish state/nation, Russia as of today is very different then in the past I say. I think that it would been wiser to hear what Russians say then maybe what Americans say, at least while Obama is still president.

If Ukranianins keep paying tribute to UPA, they are not only moving away from EU and the Slavic world, but away from the civilized world. As to the Russsians, the government needs to stop telling historians what to write.

Wajda is a genius :-)
Because he made an unbelievably funny comedy; surrealism of an average viewer's level is unbelievable and idiotism of characters is worth the ones from Leslie Nielsen.
Especially pleasantly invigorating was a moment with a sabre - what a filigree mockery.
What about a huge star on the train or a Polish flag used as a rag to wrap the feet! How far would they go in the rags made of this material :-))).
Misfortunate underground fighter skilfully hiding on the roofs and so well that almost immediately got onto the patrol, and not just a regular patrol, but exactly the same, which put him behind the bars for petty hooliganism for street littering :-)
Or his, simply brainless partner who elaborated for herself a prison sentence? The part with a biography in the application? :-)
Simply put - a kingdom of absurdity, a comedy of a year :-))).

This was mentioned in Paulina's post # 14 and as far as I understand this is an opinion of one of the Russian viewers of "Katyn". The statement itself is written in Russian.

Very nice event.

Katyń licence for Russia has been bought by Boris Berezovsky, he lives in London, he hates Putin and he has rejected Katyń on this festival.

Berezovsky is a Jew, a 'former oligarch' who now lives in London under the protection of the Rothschild family...Berezovsky is one of the financiers of various dissident groups in Chechnya, Dagestan...Putin has an arrest warrant out for him...UK will not extradite.

Strange though that he should be a be to purchase a license for Russian distribution of this film, and that the license would be honored.

Please, Gusinsky, not 'Gusinski'...The 'ski' ordinarily indicates Slavic descent.

Gusinsky also Jewish, also so-called 'oligarch'...No warrants for him, as far as I know...Whether he works with, or for, Berezovsky is unclear.

Both heavily involved in media, although any interests that Berezovsky maintains would be done by using 'fronts'.
