Does anyone know anything about a new road tax being implemented from this week and currently there are over 20 kilometres of queues at Polish borders?

Yeah I think that's exactly what it's to do with. I currently have a load of stuff being delayed because of this and I'm sure a nice extra sum on the shipping companies bill! Any idea how much this tax is or why they have done it?

Is this compulsory road pricing and toll roads across Poland now with no alternative fast roads to use? Yet more costs... sigh...

Read the web link as this applies to transit traffic going through Poland not resident traffic, although undoubtedly there will be more tolls on the 'motorways'.

new electronic system (Viatoll) of payment for driving certain roads makes it necessary for every vehicle heavier than 3.5 ton to have the system equipment on board (so called Viabox) - this electronic piece of equipment costs 120 PLN an so does the obligatory firts pay into the system which works a bit like pre-paid phones - there are electronic gates already installed at most location the system is to be in place

the most important thing for people who just drive their sedans is that when you haul a trailer (or a caravan) the weight of the vehicle is calculated by adding the weight of the trailer to the weight of the car - in many such cases you should have the Viatoll system on board (seems Poland is the only country with such a strange rule - there are other things about the system that raise outrage (like the scarcity of places where you can register for the system and where you can top-up your viabox)

here you can see which roads or road sections will have the system soon http://regiomoto.pl/portal/zdjecia/mapa-polskich-drog-i-autostrad-plat nych-w-systemie-viatoll

Just like in every other country with a similar system - it's a ******* joke.

The EU has really, really, really made a mess of this - there should have been *one* EU box for all countries, with the same system. The current setup, where you need to have a mass of boxes (put it this way - a journey from Warsaw to Vienna could potentially require FOUR boxes - wtf?) is just absolutely ridiculous.

Grr.
