gumishu: I pretty much guess that it's cheaper to pump gas through the old Yamal pipeline through Poland and Belarus transit fees included than to pump it through Nord Stream not even taking into account that from the economic point of view you need to offset the enormous cost of constructing the Nord Stream (it would have been as much as 10 times cheaper to lay a new pipeline through Latvia Lithuania and Poland (which are all EU members and have no history of not paying their gas bills to Russia) - Nord Stream was a purely political project from the very beginning
But, Nord Stream is created by financing from banks, loans in other words, and banks collect interest for a long time...The smart way to do it would be interest free, financed directly by the Russian and German treasury...But bankers run the EU...Perhaps Russia is financing it's part through Russian banks.
It is a long term strategic upgrade of infra-structure.
PennBoy: But just in case, a Poland and Ukraine friendship wouldn't be a bad idea. They could look out for one another.
It would be a good idea.
