I have searched for topics covering the Nord Stream but couldn`t find any. However, I am sure it has been discussed in PF many times. Strange.

Merkel, Medvedev open Nord Stream pipeline
08.11.2011 16:42
At a ceremony on Germany's Baltic coast, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, with Chancellor Angela Merkel and French and Dutch prime ministers, turned the Nord Stream taps on Tuesday, brining gas from western Siberia into Europe.
"Natural gas from Russia and the electricity produced from it will help provide steady energy supplies to consumers on the continent,” Medvedev said, opening the 7.3 billion euro 1,224-km pipeline project.
"This project shows that we can count on reliable and durable partnership with Russia for decades," said Chancellor Merkel.
Not everyone was pleased by the flow of gas coming through Nord Stream: Poland and Ukraine have been bitterly against the project from the start as it by-passes the two nations.
In 2006, Radek Sikorski, now Poland’s foreign minister but then head of the Defence Ministry, said the agreement between Russia and Germany to build the pipeline was “like the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact”.

Sascha, as a German patriot, do you feel more secure with Nord Stream pumping gas directly into your country without any intermediaries?

its good to know that they opened that pipeline, but in some worse case situation russia just closes the main valve and germany or parts of it have cold feet ;)

all in total i agree to that cooperation. id like more russian-german business rather than over the atlantic. its more natural and has maybe more gross benefit also for others.

german, yes. patriot ';)

Why those trick questions, that actually question someone's patriotism? ;)

People can be even better patriots when they criticize their governments.

I don't like mine, for example.

Nobody interested...They want to talk about why Polish men have underarm odor.

In any case, Norstream cuts out 'middle-men' and let's gas flow directly from Russia to Germany...Poles and Ukies collect transit fees if gas or oil goes through pipes on their territory.

Stalin-Ribbentrob pact?...Interesting comparison, but this time Germany & Russia just bypass Poles instead of occupying.

Exactly. It's just a technical matter that doesn't involve Poland. Though there are some who wish it did...

Zbig Brzeziński advised Poles: if you can`t stop it, join it.
But it was the time of PiS rule in Poland when the plans were made.

I pretty much guess that it's cheaper to pump gas through the old Yamal pipeline through Poland and Belarus transit fees included than to pump it through Nord Stream not even taking into account that from the economic point of view you need to offset the enormous cost of constructing the Nord Stream (it would have been as much as 10 times cheaper to lay a new pipeline through Latvia Lithuania and Poland (which are all EU members and have no history of not paying their gas bills to Russia) - Nord Stream was a purely political project from the very beginning

Hmm.. I dunno if Germany and Russia have some political agreement to isolate Poland. But just in case, a Poland and Ukraine friendship wouldn't be a bad idea. They could look out for one another.

But, Nord Stream is created by financing from banks, loans in other words, and banks collect interest for a long time...The smart way to do it would be interest free, financed directly by the Russian and German treasury...But bankers run the EU...Perhaps Russia is financing it's part through Russian banks.

It is a long term strategic upgrade of infra-structure.

Let the Russians build their pipeline. Let the Russians think they are important :)

It wont matter how much Russia wishes to join the Eururopean Club. It took Russia 1000 years to get their reputation as a bad guy and it will take another 1000 years to clean up their own mess.

i think they really dont care. those 'political correct moves' they make are all in their own interest, naturally, and strategic. they know who and what they are.

they and china will mess around with the eu on its toes and the pipeline is just a proove more of their dominance in europe. if they close the valve, deutschland hat 'nen kalten hintern ;)

Yes. Their nukes can destroy a lot of Western cities. That is why the West tries to deals with Russia in velvet gloves. Wouldn`t you?

Let the gas flow but also let Poland discover its potential in this area.
