Woman sets fire to herself in central Warsaw

An elderly woman set fire to herself in the centre of Warsaw, Saturday morning, suffering up to 40 percent burns.

Police say the incident occurred at around 07.15 CET when the 72 year-old woman poured liquid over herself - thought to be gasoline - in Plac Pilsudskiego, near the papal cross.

An ambulance arrived soon after and took her to a nearby hospital.

It's strange, not getting much attention in the media... I'd be interested to know what her grievances are. Polish media seem to just have the same couple of sentence writeups.

I think maybe they are afraid some of the people around the crosses might follow her example to gain attention....

As Fstop says its ironic that she ends up in hospital after protesting about low quality medical care in Poland , i guess she did not intend to survive...

I doubt that her protest is going to improve the welfare of her daughter who is in hospital...knowing your mum has just set herself on fire is not a great aid to recovery i think..?

It has worked in the past... It was particularly effective during communism..
