To say that we 'never went against the Soviets', please... we were the 'Mutual' in 'Mutually Assured Destruction'. Every day and every night we went against them. The Cold War against the Soviets may not have been the conventional military 'hot' war, but surely you can't just dismiss our efforts in defeating the Soviets. What would the world look like if our political fight was to ignore the Soviets? What if America shed all alliances after WW2? What if we said "you leave us alone, we'll leave you alone comrades"? What if we said we were tired of fighting Communist monsters on the other side of the world just to have another monster takes its place? I agree, perspective mate.
