Poland sees its past in Belarus's present

With an authoritarian crackdown in Belarus showing no sign of letting up, neighboring Poland has emerged as a vocal counterweight to what strikes many here as a frightening return to a Soviet past.

In a historic twist, Warsaw, itself once a center of repression and of stirring resistance, has taken the lead in calling for a strong and concerted European response to the raids, arrests and other heavy-handed measures taken over the past month by a regime led by Alexander Lukashenko, who was sworn in Friday to a new five-year term as president.

Poland needs to rebuild its country before launching forays into foreign policy. I mean they still have 12% unemployment, a huge diaspora, low wages, etc. Poland has a long way to go.

A huge diaspora? What's that got to do with anything? Polish government is simply "paying it forward." There was a time people felt about Poland the way you now feel about Belarus (aka, not our problem). Fortunately not all people felt the same way.

Poland is repeating the mistakes of the 1920's and 1930's, when they picked border skirmishes with the surrounding countries. By the time of the German invasion of 1939 Poland was invaded by all sides, not just the Russians and the Germans but the Czechs, Slovaks and the Ukrainians.

Germany is in a strong enough position (politically and economically) to deal with Belarus, not Poland.

Poland is presently building a nation. It's not in a position to pick a fight with Belarus. It's a problem they can't solve.

If their concern is Polish Nationals living in Belarus, well they should invite them into Poland.

How is Poland building a nation? I don't get it. It's a free, democratic society, a country that's a part of the EU and NATO. When Poland was a totalitarian nation there were several independent radio stations transmitting from Germany, a neighboring country. My mother remembers listening to BBC and Voice of America to offset the Pravda BS. Poland is now doing the same for Belarus. It's something Poland should be praised for rather than admonished.

J.C., the author has my last name! Along with the head of the U.S. Abortion Rights Council, I'm in good company.
On a serious note, I've now chosen to change my name - I got to the point where she compares the openness of western elections to that of Belarus, and I knew she's just looking for reasons to push her agenda. A beaver is brown and it also goes to the bathroom, but that doesn't mean it's brown because it goes to the bathroom, and so forth.

And Joe Pisudki, did you get your history degree from Sumyunguy University? I'm surprised they didn't tell you that the Slovaks and Czechs were puppets of the Nazi regime. Oh well, what are facts when you've already made up your mind about being right and need to prove it? As far as the comparison to '39 goes, I think a better one would be when Tom Cruise tried to recruit Nicole to the Church or Scientology and now he's doing the same with Katie. Like dude, teeth whitening won't work forever.

Poland should have as much concern for the 12% unemployed. They have roads to build, generating domestic energy so that they become energy independent, build up their manufacturing, etc. They have a lot of work to do. Belarus is a distraction.

where they have always lived - it was the borders that shifted over their heads. Who are you
to suggest that they should leave the land where they have lived for generations?

But you must admit - it's rather odd that Poland is making such a fuss about Poles there, yet won't return the citizenship that was stolen from them by the Communists.

(same situation with the Poles in Western Ukraine and elsewhere - the Karta Polaka just doesn't cut it)
