The presence of a man of the cloth often has a more comforting effect on the homeless than the uniform of a law-enforcement official.

The local Hare Krishna used to run a soup round in Warsaw, giving food to rough sleepers every evening until the Church got together with the police to stop it. That was several years ago. I wonder how many rough sleepers have died since then...

No, they take them to homeless shelters. Homeless topers are often relucatnt becasuer the shelters don't admit those under the influence, but PM Tusk himself has appealed to the shelters to accept everyone in the severe weather. The priests are usually regarded as more credible than police.

people, did you heard for controversial Hungarian law (by the ruling regime) by which homeless people needs to pay 500 euro penalty if captured on a public places by the police? crazy, isn`t it.

no, its for real. It was info from Hungarian documentary (3-4 days ago) on Serbian TV. Hungarian social workers called situation bizarre and they currently wage real war with the police and government in order to protect homeless people. What i sow from documentary public places are among else considered to be city parks (there was video how they arresting homeless people in some park).

Is that normal for police in EU countries to arresting and mistreat homeless people? Hitler would be proud by the EU

The situation is a disgrace - it's one thing banning people in summer when they can be blissfully wasted outside, but when it's below -10c - they should be taking anyone if they receive any public funding.

drunk people cause trouble you know - would you as a non-alcohol-addicted homeless person enjoy the company stinking drunks? - I am not sure every shelter has facilities to wash and clothe these people - also it's not so easy task to do that (try washing and clothing a semi-unconscious person and then multiply the time by an order of hundred)

Much better that using dirty needles in some empty flat with neighbours around. They're going to do it anyway, so why not be practical about it and let them do it safely?

The homeless should be required to adopt neighborhoods where they are required to mow an trim everyone who lives in that neighborhood's yard. That way they have a job and no one but them has to mow. This should pay for their shelter rent.

Around here the hired helps look like cussing tramps so why not have them all mow yards? If they cannot find anything to do there are trillions of blades of grass they can cut.

The homeless aren't errant children. They're lost people, some with mental illnesses, some with addiction issues, others with both. They don't just need "a job". If they could just pick themselves up off the sidewalk and adopt cultural norms, they wouldn't BE homeless. They need outreach on many levels, before they can assume the responsibility of working for and with others.

If they aren't errant children why do they need 'outreach?' At least mowing yards would give them something to do and society would be grateful they stepped up to the plate performing a vital community service. Wtg homeless!

When someone gets to that situation in life, they need a bit more help than being given a pair of shears and pointed at a garden.

Let them earn their help by mowing my yard :) I think it's a brilliant idea. I would look at them in a totally new light if they did this. It would be a positive experience for them. People would appreciate what they do.
