Polish foreign policy
Dancing with the big boys
In its foreign policy Poland has chosen realism over romanticism

Nov 25th 2010 | WARSAW | from PRINT EDITION

CRITICS and supporters of Polish foreign policy agree on one thing. Relations with Russia have been transformed in the past three years. But into what?

To the critics, a planned visit by Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s president, to Warsaw in December epitomises surrender, stemming from naivety or cynicism. They see Poland scampering after big countries such as Russia, France and Germany, rather like a teenager desperate to hang out with adults, heedless of the national interest.

The time between Smoleńsk and now should have served as a time in which to redefine the national interest. PO have to formulate a clear game plan when it comes to international relations and implementing strategies as there are other, hungrier powers that will make that decision for them. Tusk acquiesces a lot and that isn't healthy in some cases.

Now that we now it comes from a reliable source (I know as I use it and trust it), let's proceed. This needs to go beyond Russia. It's always interesting to look at relations with China. Scotland has positive ties, largely thanks to Alex Salmond who negotiated a fair bit on our behalf. Poland has the same. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen 'wyprudukowano w Chinach' here. Then again, trade is but one component of international relations and foreign policy.
