Polish journalist charged with insulting Belarusian President

A correspondent for the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza has been charged with insulting Belarusian president Aleksander Lukashenko.

The current charges are based on ten articles published in the Gazeta Wyborcza daily, later disseminated through a Belarusian dissident website.

Sad. Insulting the President should be a national right, as it is in most countries.

There are currently big tensions between Poland and Belarus. Plus Lukashenko is a nice little dictator. Last time he was talking about moje polaki referring to the large polish diasopra in Belarus who are being discriminated against. The Polish Goverment should really give citizentship to these people.

These "ethnicaly" Polish people who live in so called belrussia presumably live in,well, what was Poland,so uprooting them and re settling them in Polands post 45 borders is something that ,if it had to be done should have been done then. As I say,to do it now is to be complicit in a form of Ethnic cleansing. Belrussia,or the territory it now covers has always been a melting pot and cross roads ,fine,play along with this guy and declare it not only juden frei but Polen frei etc etc....

That's ridiculous. Are there no freedom of speech laws in Belarus? Sounds very 1984.

Anyone who's grandparents or parents were born in Poland is eligible for a polish passport.

Don't you think the same right can be afforded whose parents were born in territory that was formerly poland, and who identify as polish?
How is this ethnic cleansing. Poland allows dual-citizenship, the poles in belarus should have a choice, at the very least it would allow polish individuals in belarus to work in the EU and send the earnings back home..

I guess, when you look at it, everything goes down to who has control over the media. In North America private companies own and control the media, and control what information is released to the public. No one has a lot of freedom anywhere (unless you're an extremely wealthy and powerful individual) . :-) As much as many ordinary people want to believe that we do, we really don't.

That's why we need sites like wikileaks or zerohedge - to make people aware of what's really going on. One has to look for that information, it doesn't come in your daily paper.

Misia: Seriously? Interesting, and E.U. allows this? Yup, a couple of countries have the same laws. Regarding the rest of the post, most people are too lazy to seek out objective information. Laws restricting freedom of expression towards certain members of society end up creating an environment in which more and more speech is restricted for the "common good".

Indeed. And it was used against some homeless man, if I recall rightly - for insulting Lech Kaczynski.

In regards to Poles being dual citizens - as I recall, Brussels placed considerable pressure on Poland not to grant Polish citizenship to those stuck in the former USSR. As a result, they can only get the "Karta Polaka" - not full citizenship.

If this is the story i am thinking of......

The guy was spoken to by the Policja , and told he should respect the presidents office , with this he let out a resounding fart and was arrested....

He failed to appear at court and a warrant was issued for his arrest....

They even had interpol looking for the farting pole....!

If he gets a fine i reckon we all ought to have a whip round and pay it for him....111

Its ethnic cleansing 101," allowing" troublesome minorities to leave the country while keeping a tight control on the rest of the population. Misia: Interesting, and E.U. allows this? Police hunt farting dissident

Police in Poland have launched a nationwide hunt for a man who farted loudly when asked what he thought of the president.

Hubert Hoffman, 45, was charged with "contempt for the office of the head of state" for his actions after he was stopped by police in a routine check at a Warsaw railway station.

He complained that under President Lech Kaczynski and his twin brother Jaroslaw, the country was returning to a Communist style dictatorship.

When told to show more respect for the country's rulers, he farted loudly and was promptly arrested.

Hoffmann was arrested and released on bail but failed to turn up at a Warsaw court early this week to be tried, and the judge in the case rejected an appeal by defence lawyers to throw the charges out.

A court spokesman said: "Such a case of disrespect is taken very seriously."

Instead the court ordered the police to start a nationwide hunt for the man, and interpol have been alerted.

I suppose the police will be using sniffer dogs to find him

The Belarussians I have talked to share a hatred for the Poles for some reason.They call Poles chytry and put them in the same category as Ukrainians who they describe as crooks.They are fond of Russians though who they regard brothers.
