Why is it that you never really hear about Polish Organized crime? I've been reading up and that there is a large Polish Mafia presence in Chicago and other areas of America and also in Europe for example:

"In crime, East will meet West. Organised syndicates from Poland and the Baltic
States have been active beyond national borders. In Germany, Polish organized crime
groups are the second largest non-German organized crime group after Turkish
groups."

Does anyone have any more information particularly about the Pruszkow mafia and other Mafioso

There used to be very serious gang wars in Poland in 90's with rivals blowing up or shooting one another, later Police either arrested or forced to escape from Poland most of the leaders and the groups running the "business" now don't operate so openly.

And the activity abroad... they mostly supply drugs, steal cars etc. rather without killing and such things so the media don't pay much attention.

Polish and European Mafia is all alive and well in Chicago. Its not like it was 10 years ago when we had our own Mafias. Today Polish mobsters in Chicago are working together with Russians, Serbs and Italians. By the end of 90s European organized crime was dissapearing due to large Latin populations. I think Chicago was hit the most. Most of the europan mafia members moved to Milwaukee and and Minessota, but they are still active in Chicago. Polish mafia was always tied to anfetamine production, (no wonder, we have most talented chemists) exporting it to the United States and then transporting this stuff to different cities.

Please don not ask me how i know this.

That's not saying much lol. It's like saying, for example, that Americans are the second largest non-Polish orgranized crime group in Poland. It doesn't really matter considering that Poles mainly live in Poland, just like Germans mainly live in Germany. They don't make that huge of an impact.

On a lighter note, I love Poland.

So the Polish mobsters are better than the government, they are able work together with other nations not against. :-)

Because it practically doesn't exist. There is no such thing as a 'Polish mafia', just a bunch of opportunistic criminal gangs and elements. We used to call them 'white *******', since they were practically slaves to other organized crime syndicates like the Russian, Jewish, and Italian mafia's and could never really make it on their own, especially in the rural parts of Poland, where the peasants had their own way of dealing with these embarrassments.

Wrong, the Polish government is the 'Polish mafia', for the very reason that they are able to work together with other nations and not against. :-)

They have elements in different cities of course. I recognise the mafia here. There is a resident scarface and he seems to get what he wants.

Why not engage in organised crime? Poland is a classic state, like many others, where the police would be in on it. Are you gonna slave your guts out for peanuts when you can make some serious money? We all commit crimes, some are just more heinous than others.

Sad but you're actually right here. In former(?) communist countries you can't really hear about the mafia for the very reason that the governments work as "legalized mafias"...

Hi... jumping in and possibly diluting this subject a little, but is Poland a 'safe' place generally to visit? I read recently there's a lot of car crime. We visited Barcelona recently and the list of things to be wary of went on and on (and ultimately the trip passed without incident)! But I've not seen any 'do's and don't's' lists for Poland.

Very safe. Take normal precautions and don't flash money. Leave your team's scarf at home.

Thanks, 1jola.

I see my question has also been answered elsewhere recently on the boards, so apologies for repeating that.

My defence is I'm a newbie :-)

Once coming back from work at night in Warsaw I saw a black guy walking in the city center with his head down while counting money in his wallet. Pretty stupid, but how safe he must have felt.

Any serious polish criminal would probably end up in a large European city such as London, where it's easier to go undetected and line your pockets at the same time!

I think russian mafia runs Poland in cooperation with local aid.Poles generally do not have the secrecy, style, bonds to operate mafia style and they are not ruthless like Russians.

Not quite but you need to go into Wołomin and Pruszków and tell them that. Some are and you can see that.

Gazeta Wyborcza (sorry, I can't find a link) printed a map of which gang controls which part of Warsaw. Apart from the usual suspects mentioned above, there were also other Mazowsze ones, eg. Nowy Dwór, and gangs from Białystok and Gdańsk with territory here.

But if your luxury car's stolen, it's probably off-duty police.

You can't find anything because the gangs are reluctant to open Facebook accounts.

For a while there was a wave of criminal activities from Polish gangs in NL. They simply would rob some store, warehouse or residential house, load the stuff in their cars and move off back to PL. We know they were Polish as most of these incidents happened right over the NL-DE border and Dutch police caught gangs every now and then. But I don't hear much from that lately.

M-G (some of them are still in Dutch jails)

In Chicago there is a Polish street gang called the SouthSide Insane Popes. Not to be confused with their rival the NorthSide Insane Popes or Almighty Popes who are not Polish, but are white.

Who cares if Polish OC isn't heard about too much. OC in general is terrible. I hate how kids try to glorify the Mafia. There is nothing cool about it.

what, exactly is mafia? How many people? My personal definition is 4 people or more, kicking a percentage of their ill-gotten gains to the leader. Is that what we're talking about?
