Hundreds of Polish TIR long-distance freight lorries are stranded at Russian border crossings with Estonia and Belarus after a Polish-Russian transit agreement expired earlier in January.

Polish truckers have been denied entry to Russia as a commercial transit agreement lapses between Russia and Poland.

I caught a glimpse of this story on TV this morning - what's the story behind the story, anyone?

Oh, another failure of Polish diplomacy. But Tusk had been doing so well to suck up to the Russians that he must have been sure they'd treat him nicely. He's probably trying to work out what else he can do for them. A spot of Danegeld perhaps?

Poland pee'd off Belarus complaining about Belarus election results. So now Polish trucks are backed up at the border. Brilliant!

It's not actually a failure of Polish diplomacy, but rather protectionism by Russia. The story is really rather simple - Poland wants the right to transport more through Russia, and Russia doesn't particularly want to allow them to do this due to the impact on their own industry.

It's just another power game by Russia - nothing new here. Quite what the companies were doing sending trucks to Russia with the deadline approaching is another question.

This may be the real reason, they are all stocking up.

Beer to be classified as alcohol for first time in Russia

Beer is to be legally classified as an alcoholic drink in Russia for the first time as the Kremlin forges ahead with the toughest anti-alcohol campaign since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The beverage is technically classified as a foodstuff for now, an anomaly that has allowed producers to avoid a sweeping new crackdown on alcohol advertising and night-time sales.
