For who exactly in Turkmenistan? Infant mortality is terribly high. It's such a paradise that it's considered high treason to speak out against working conditions, or criticize any aspect of the government. Need someone to blame? No problem, just pick someone that you fear is growing in popularity and torture them. You want medical care? No problem as long as you live in Ashgabat, glorious leader decreed that all hospitals outside of the capital should be closed. Pension payments to old retired workers were discontinued a few years back, leaving them with no means to get food or medical treatment, pensions have been partially restored after they found out that old people were dying because of lack of food and medicine (who would have thought it?). Free water, gas, and electricity sounds great, except that outside of Ashgabat, it's extremely difficult to get access to the distribution network...Not only due to lack of infrastructure, well, nepotism on a local level is insane.

You know, put your money where your mouth is. Renounce your citizenship to the bourgeois state that is shackling you and your fellow workers, and emigrate to Turkmenistan.

Not surprising !

Still too much bureaucracy.

Disregard for law and order.

Poor infrastructure.

Incompetent users in I.T.

Percentage of poverty undisclosed.

Politically manipulated economy.

Believe me, many people are living below the bread-line.
You need to travel around to get the bigger picture.

ive lived in 3 of the top 5 on BB's dolce vita list, 6 of the top 20 and a further 5 that are not mentioned

i now live in a backward 3rd world country where blackouts are the norm, the streets flood whenever it rains, crossing the road is about a dangerous as taking a dip in a pool full of piranha and inferstructure is a word people have problems spelling

that said, la vita is kinda dolce

i eat out 3 times a day in restaurants that would not be out of place in london, rome, paris or new york, i drink patron tequila, skyy vodka and veuve clicquot at weekends in bars full of women that make your head turn, i see the latest films (mr ritchie is back on form) before you do, goldie popped by to spin some thumpin chooons over christmas and beach is just down the road

so lets put things in to perspective... coz i couldnt do this on any of the countries on the dolce vita list... for less than $1000 a month

great in the UK, compared to Czech Republic which is a beautiful country with the old buildings. It looks like a postcard.

Yep there's not many old buildings at all in the UK.

Yep there's not many old buildings at all in the UK.

The Czech Republic is more attractive. Plus, it's much cheaper.

Sure, was so much better when the Berlin Wall was up! Ah, how I long those old fashioned kapos at the Frankfurt/oder crossing between west and east germany, their machine guns, their dogs.. Everyone stay where they belong, and the world will be a better place!

Russia is definetely not a paradise on Earth in terms of freedom of speech or freedom in general but neither is Lithuania.
Putting aside the issue of these two countries the chart still doesn't look any plausible.

2009 Quality of Life Index

Priceless :-)

According to geniuses who made that ranking Poland has economy which
allows comparable quality of life to that of Armenia or Venezuela. We are
worse, however, than Angola, Trinidad & Tobago and even India (where
600 million people have to defecate in the street because they can't even
afford toilets).

We could also have better climate - with a score of 76 (on level par with Mozambique)
we are no match for countries like Uganda (80), Botswana (81) or Slovakia (81) not to
mention climate-giants like Zambia, Algeria, Guatemala or the leaders - Zimbabwe.

As far as risk&safety are concerned - it's good to know that we are on level par
with South Africa and Brazil (86), but I think we could try to catch up with countries
who are, at the moment, safer than Poland (like Namibia, that with the score of 93
sets the standard for us to imitate :)).

I can't believe that some people are getting paid to make and publish such
nonsensical rankings :)

sure, thats complete bullshlt about Lithuania. From what ive read theyve got official law forbidding to say anything positive about homosexuals. i dont give a damn about situation of gays in L. but c'mon its second decade of XXI century.

India (where 600 million people have to defecate in the street because they can't even afford toilets).

i was in the tea house recently and they had a 'a smell of india' flavour in the menu. now i know how lucky i was not ordering the one.

oh well. These are just numbers after all. After comparing Canada and the US up close and personal (extended visits to Canada, family in both places, living in the US for most of my life), I can't really see the major difference between the two on a day-to-day level. Maybe less visible poverty in Canada, if anything. Canada, i still like you.

Besides didn't Canada consistently receive the title of "Best Place to Live" again and again until recently?
