maybe it isn't in your hands simply

Exactly the reason I'd never let Poles import RHD cars - can you imagine the carnage?

I'd be in favour of allowing people to have them, upon passing a special test (or holding a licence from an RHD country). But I just don't want to imagine the horror of your average Polish macho driver with an RHD car. The ones visiting from the UK are bad enough!

I can - so if one campaigns for allowing RHD car registration in Poland acts to the detriment of the general population here - what works somewhere does not always work elsewhere - (a business in pork in a muslim country anyone???)

Has anyone on PF ever driven a lhd car in the British Isles? How on earth would one overtake when driving behind a big coach or lorry? That is, without having the right half of the car sliced away by an oncoming vehicle.

Yep. Just wait for a very straight section of road, because you're going to have to overtake from deep (ie, so far back you can see the road ahead from the hedge).

That, or trust your passenger to give you the green light.

Yes I have. Overtaking is either a question of staying far enough back to see properly or looking up the inside of the lorry, waiting to allow anything that you couldn't have seen from the inside line and then pulling out to have a final look before overtaking.

Yes , i used to collect American cars , all were left hand drive...Its not a problem , you just have to be a bit more carefull...

I have driven on both sides of the road , with cars with the wheel on either side..it would only be a problem if i tried to drive like many of the Polish drivers , but after more than twenty years on the race tracks on bikes and in cars , i don,t feel the need to prove anything by driving like an idiot....

Yes, I have. Had no problems except I had to take some roundabouts clockwise and some other anticlockwise. The simplest way to overtake a lorry was the identical technique I use in Poland: to fall off the truck and when I see the possibility gear down to 3rd and accelerate.

My golden rule was mentally reversing directions. Pointing to the left I would say "I pull over to the right" and opposite. This helped a lot.

There was one really funny incident in UK. I was waiting to join the main road and there was an English car just opposite, both I and them waiting for chance to join in the same direction. My wife, sitting in the right-hand passenger seat was perusing a large map. I started first, and the Englishman had the right of way... My wife told me both the driver and his gf looked at us unable to believe in what they saw: The Polish DRIVER reading the map covering half of windshield and accelerating on the turn! (At least it looked that way to them, since they expected the driver seated at the right...) ;-)))))))))))))))

I must have had similar facial expression when I saw a car on English plates on an autobahn close to Poland and the passenger in the front seat was reading what looked like a newspaper (perhaps it was a map however) - the impression was even more distracting as we were overtaking them

the passenger should have a bit experience in such judging if you don't want to end up in a head-on collission
