I have to say that I am full of respect and gratitude to Russia for their noble
and compassionate reaction to the tragedy of Poland today.

President Miedwiediew has announced that the Monday 12th will be the day of
national mourning in Russia, the Russian TV has changed it's schedule (cancelled
the planned satirical show) and a lot of time on all Russian TV stations is dedicated
to the crash.

Generally, the feeling of Poles who are in Russia now is that Russian authorities
reacted with great sincerity and pain, just as if it was a Russian plane that
crashed in Smolensk and not Polish.

The conduct of Russian authorities and society is truly exemplary. In such moment
it really means a lot. Thank you, Russia.

This could mark the turning point, Torqy. The black box details are being examined and should prove to be revealing.

Cooperation is across the board. Belarus have waivered their visa requirement to allow Poles free transit through to go and inspect the bodies of their loved ones.

Once again - fair play to Russia. They have our respect and gratitude today.

Today we are at the key point in history between our nations (Poland-Russia)

And i hope very much that tragedy will not just a waste of lives those not ordinary people,

but will take off anti-Russians made fake mask from Russia and bring our nations closer.

See, we can all be brothers if we want to :)

Unfortunately it took a tragedy of this magnitude for it to happen, but at least it's a start.

>^..^<

M-G (hopes the reason will soon be revealed and we can give the ppl the chance to grieve decently without anger for not knowing the cause)

I agree but so many other leaders are the same, Sok. The political climate dictates his actions.

Latest Russian news (i-net transl.):«Landing was made at strong fog. The trajectory on landing shows that the deviation from strip was not only on height, but also on horizon approximately 150 metres», — the head of the Ministry of Emergency Measures of the Russian Federation Sergey Shojgu speaks.

The Russian dispatchers suggested the Polish pilots to plant the liner in Moscow or Minsk. But were refused. At landing the liner clings to tops of trees and falls downwards. To landing strip the board hasn't held on only 300 metres. On shots from place of events it is visible that chassis have got stuck among branches.

«On removal of 1,5 kilometres the group of management of flights has found out that the crew has increased vertical speed of decrease and has started to decrease more low глиссады. The head of flights has given command to crew about plane transfer in horizontal flight, and when the crew hasn't executed instructions, has some times given command on leaving on spare airdrome. Nevertheless the crew continued to decrease. Unfortunately, it has ended tragically», — the first deputy chief of the General staff of the Air Forces lieutenant general Alexander Alyoshin has declared.

I find this 'surprise' to be...'surprising' - but believable.

As a Pole living in the West, I am not surprised by this.

Again, maybe some good may come from this tragedy.

You cannot guess whether a politician is honest or not, usually they do what they consider profitable for themselves. What is really important is reaction of common people, lack of irrational hate and willingness to feel sorry for others.

The same can be said of others in similar positions of power.
Still, Putin PALES in comparison to his Western counterparts.

The Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will make a speech to Polish nation.
Polish TV will record it today. According to the Government Information Centre,
Putin has requested the opportunity to address Poles.

http://wiadomosci.onet.pl/2153391,12,premierzy_zlozyli_kwiaty_putin_pr zygotowuje_oredzie,item.html

Tusk uklęknął na chwilę przy szczątkach maszyny. Putin stał obok niego; przeżegnał się.

Tusked kneeled down for a moment at the wreck of the plane. Putin was standing
next to him; he made a sign of the cross.

Po złożeniu kwiatów, szefowie rządów, objęli się i rozmawiając po rosyjsku udali się w stronę ratowników, którzy nie przerwali akcji po zachodzie słońca.

After leaving flowers, both Prime Ministers hugged and, talking in Russian, went
towards the rescue crews, who were still working after the sunset.

Sincere or not, these are nice gestures nonetheless and maybe a sign
of better realtions between Poland and Russia in the future. Time will tell.

We will know quite soon the full story but we can leave no stone unturned. We should learn from the past not to let things hang in the air and cause bitterness. What Stalin did was awful but that was 70 years ago and in a vastly different climate than today. Putin is really being thorough by the seems of it and Tusk is alongside him. This is the cooperation that we need, it looks so natural.

It does, doesn't it? Maybe I'm being naïve, but I really want to believe that it is
the beginning of a completely new chapter in Polish-Russian relations.

Likewise! Enemies don't treat each other in the way that Russians are treating Poles at the moment. I see no guilt, just empathy!

Maybe Russia is so nice because the entire world learned about Katyn today. Next to the tragic news about the death of the president of Poland there is a reason given why he was flying there. That's every TV/radio news station, not to mention Internet. Many listeners never heard of Katyn until today. If there is anything positive from this tragedy, sadly this could be it.

Or maybe they just want to sincerely show their compassion? I don't know, but I'd rather
give them the benefit of the doubt than suspect any low motives.

You have a good point here, this is one of the positive things that might come from it.

Dear Polish people! I am a Russian, living in DK. This is a chocking catastrophe, please accept my condolences. I hope the families of those who were on that plane can recover somehow... So sorry about this situation! Past was bad, actually awful. I hope the future would be better for our nations.

And I also hope, the past has taken all lives it wanted to take. Enough!

Russians are with you.

Torq, I value your historical knowledge, and objectivity - what is a good book about Katyń that you would recommend?
