This looks like there's quite a fight developing. A lot of it is about issues of diplomatic immunity and whether a former embassy counts as being extraterritorial.

The Polish version has a lot more details than the English one - it was front page news in Warsaw today.

Conflict arises over Serbian embassy premises in Warsaw
26th January 2010

The Warsaw bailiff has ordered the Serbian embassy staff to vacate their premises in the city's downtown.
Gazeta Wyborcza has reported of a feud between the Gawroński family and the Republic of Serbia over the rights to the former embassy building on Al. Ujazdowskie 23/25 in Warsaw.
In 2005 Serbia was ordered to give back the building to its rightful pre-war owners. Citing international immunity, Serbia had refused to vacate the building, although its diplomatic mission had already relocated, leaving the property empty.

rest of story

and the full Polish version

This is the building in question. I pass it every day and can confirm it's been empty for ages. There are small trees starting to grow on the roof and it looks like water is leaking into the building.

Serbian embassy

What a strange post.

The Warsaw stuff at the moment must have a reason - I wonder what the root is and how it will turn out.

And by the way, yes, I would like Radtko Mladic in London, or indeed anywhere else out of hiding.

For American Embassy it had been an different outcome :)

WARSAW -- Even in a city cursed with a skyline of Stalinist blocks, the U.S. Embassy stands out as an architectural nightmare -- a glass, cement and aluminum hulk, circa 1960.

in Lusatia on vacation

A fourteen year holiday at a secret address.

On topic, what do you think about the embassy thing? It's a beautiful pair of buildings (the part not in the photo is better) but right now it's like a missing tooth on al. Ujazdowskie.

what that has with Serbia?

if communists in Poland took somebody`s property, it should be returned and Serbia should get other building from Polish authorities. Its simple

The Serbian governent is occupying the building and refusing to hand it back.

erbia should get other building from Polish authorities

That has already happened. A couple of years ago. But they are determined to hang on to the previous building for no obvious reason.

I dont get the Serbs, if they already vacated the building whats the problem? Besides i'm sure they've been offered a suitable location by our goverment.

They moved in to the new place over a year ago. This is probably either a) bloodyindedness because Poland supports Montenegro and Kosovo, or b) there's something about the building that they don't want people to know about or c) they are trying to buy time for some yet unknown reason.

so? well, i`m not surprised

listen, current Serbian ruling establishment don`t have anything with Serbian people. Serbia`s politicians are in general NATO/EU puppets [as you know Serbia was conquered in 1999 by NATO and is now protectorate or reservate if you want]

Sokrates:
I dont get the Serbs

you don`t get me? i even wasn`t aware of problem. Go complaint to EU and NATO, Serbia is their protectorate

Cant the owner of the property just move in with the eviction order, pack their stuff and send it to them via DHL together with the bill?

Its all a bit unreasonable.

That's what he wants to do, but the Serbians have suggested they'll physically resist the bailiffs.

The link to the GW story has most of the known info. There's a bit they haven't printed, but most of it isn't there.

Well the Serbs are being unreasonable but the way i see it, offer them a bigger more attractive place (we have quite a few reserved in downtown Warsaw) and send in Foreign ministry officials to mediate, from what i can read between the lines the ministry is not doing enough to avoid the scandal, we cant physically boot foreign diplomats either.

Another thing i dont like is Serbs trying to annex the territory, they're our guests and need to be treated with respect but thats too much.

That's possible - Yugoslavia was known during the Cold War to use their embassies for all sorts of shady dealings. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if there's something about the building that they don't want made public - although why Serbia would be bothered these days is a good question.

If he isn't dead he'll be in The Hague soon.

Interesting to know what they're hiding in the former embassy in Warsaw.

This is nothing to what the Germans found in russian embassy in Berlin in 1941.Apart from trapped doors with automatic guns the Russians kept pools with special acids which completely dissolved the human body even the bones. In this way the Germans managed to explain how some of their spies had entered the embassy without being seen getting out.

Gruesome. It begs the question about some of the secrets those buildings hold. Even here in Warsaw.

The Tunisian Embassy in Moscow is in Beria's old house, and when they renovated it a few years ago, human remains were found behind walls in the cellar. Apparently the last abassador's wife couldn't sleep due to things that go bump in the night.

The latest on this story is that the Serbians were evicted, the building has been secured with steel shutters, and there are security guards to stop them returning.

are you sure that all this isn`t about Ratko Mladic? There were rumors that Serb Ratko spent some time in Lusatia/Germany (working on his `German collapse from inside` project) and then, some people mentioned possibility that he could be hidden in Warsaw in the building of abandoned Serbian embassy
