T-Mobile replaces Era

Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa has commenced the process of introducing a global brand, T-Mobile, onto the Polish market. The new brand will replace the present one as of June 5, 2011. This gradual process is planned to last several months. PTC will continue its activities on the Polish market under the current company name while applying the values and the strategy represented by the new brand of T-Mobile which belongs to Deutsche Telekom Group, a co-founder and the sole owner of PTC.

What a silly question! I just bought a Motorola Defy an hour ago (for my girlfriend's birthday, she destroys phones at a frightening rate) and I certainly didn't have to get internet for it too.

pgtx: you don't have to get internet access, but in that case why do you need a smart phone anyway... Perhaps you have wifi at home and fancy surfing the net while in the bath?

I do not understand why people get so excited about the smartphone circus. If you cannot live without e-mail, FB etc for even a few hours... I liked the old Nokia 6310 phones. You could drop them on the floor again and again, they would stil work. Battery went on forever. Compare that to any smartphone.

A few years back they didn't have affordable calling plans in Poland, everyone had a cell phone to "show off" but they only used the text messaging, it was too expensive to call someone.

I totally agree. Nowadays, it is hard to find a real phone for a businessman.

Well... I'm using a GPS navigation program in my old Nokia phone. It does not work without the Internet connection. Not only maps are uploaded as I'm driving but also realistic traffic info. The program is aware of traffic jams and selects the optimal route automatically. You could not have that in offline mode. It is my choice if I want to have Internet activated or not, also with a smartphone.

I am with T-Mobile and whenever I am in Poland it roams to ERA. I've been happy with T-Mobile, but a little concerned with what will happen when AT&T takes over. Perhaps, the deal will be shot down. There are those in America attempting to avoid any one cell phone provider becoming too large.

I just recently bought an older smart phone made by Nokia. It still has the old-fashioned keys for texting. It looks and operates a lot like my "dumb Nokia." It has Symbian software, but I believe in the future the viruses will be attacking the Droid phones and IPhones.

What made me get a smart phone from 2008 rather than a new touch screen model is the fact that this Nokia (N82) is considered to have one of the best cell phone cameras. Even compared to newer cameras with more pixels. It has the type of flash on many point and shoot cameras and it has a covered lens. On my recent vacation, I felt happy to have one device that could connect to the Internet without a data plan, and take pretty darned good pictures.

Nokia is cool because it is compatible in the USA and in Europe. No frequency problems. :-)

What makes me, Softsong, a little bit despaired it the industry pushes smartphones as "all-in-one" solution and it seems there is no way back; I simply don't understand these new devices.

It's fine if there is a good camera there (and I do not mind a camera in a traditional mobile phone - you'll never miss an opportunity to take a photo). Some professions forbid having a camera with you; I even had a Nokia specifically without a camera ;-) Still, I believe I'm better off with my Pentax DSLR if I want to shoot really good pictures. Young people are however obsessed with smartphones, perhaps it is the way it has to be.

Yes, you are right about that. Sometimes we have to move on whether we want to or not. I have a hard time discarding something that works perfectly fine for something newer. My good digital camera has an out-dated media card and I have a difficult time finding a lab to handle it. :-(

A dedicated camera will always be better than a mobile phone camera. Maybe one day they will equal a better camera, but for now I believe the lens is too limiting.

My other phone took not-so-great pictures and this one is night and day. It is as good as an inexpensive point and shoot which means I can get all those unexpected pictures that I would otherwise miss.

The old Nokia I'm talking about (6220 Classic) even has perhaps not-so-great movie camera, but the recorded audio is just fantastic!
