Obligatory uniforms in primary and middle schools
As of September uniforms will be mandatory in Polish primary and middle schools.
The resolution was passed by the Lower Chamber of Polish parliament, which approved the Senate's amendment to the Educational System Act.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education Roman Giertych, appealed to MPs to accept the amendment. “There are funds in the budget to purchase several thousand outfits for the poorest children,” Giertych assured.
The Lower Chamber has also accepted an amendment, according to which the schools will be able to choose up to three textbooks for each subject at a given level of education.
There won’t be any restrictions as to the choice of curriculum either.
Thirty eight MPs voted against the amendment, 338 were in favour of it, nobody abstained from voting.
The Ministry of Education wanted schools to choose only one textbook, but restricting the choice of textbooks to three means that things will stay as they are now.
Minister Giertych explained that presently very few schools use more than three textbooks. He pointed out that restricting the choice to only one would cause a greater circulation of second-hand books, so they eventually would become cheaper.
“I hope that after reconsideration Law and Justice will come back to talks about one, cheap textbook” the Minster said.
“First and foremost we think about parents’ pockets, but this case concerns also booksellers, producers and textbooks’ authors” Law and Justice MP Tadeusz Cymanski explained.
According to Cymanski, the Higher Chamber’s amendment, "...means progress and is a step in the right direction."
The Educational System Act now goes to the President for signing.
