I have already invaded your country - how do you expect to fight a war when you don't know who the enemy is?

F-16s however were a solid purchase well worth the money, my only beef is that we bought 48 instead of 96 but thats our f*cked up politicians for you.

Why 96?.. Maybe 120 - or 144?... :-)

These toys cost rather much...

Sokrates:
Poland recently had deals with Malaysia, India, Peru and Iraq.

In reality, Poland is almost non-existing player on world's defence market. Malaysia bought only several dozen of tanks. If you meant a tank contest in Peru, it was won by China. As for Iraq - Poland managed to gain a little fraction of orders for rifles and armoured cars, while US manufacturers are benefiting from destroying of Iraqi equipment by the US Army. They even sell the Iraqis used post-Soviet tanks, upgraded in USA, and don't mind to share any piece of this cake... :-(

Sokrates:
Last i checked the technology we have in our F-16s is from the 2000s and is all the way up there with the most modern aircraft in the world.

Naturally, if you refer to avionics and radar, not to the airframe itself...

Sokrates:
Well... lets look at what Poland bought in the last 10 years:

Krab - XXI century SPH artillery system.

How many? Two prototypes 10 years ago? ;-)

Sokrates:
Europe could not offer us an equally good/cheap fighter aircraft and i'm not going to see my country throw out money it has little of.

It could: Gripen. While it's at least equally good, it's cheaper, especially in service.

Because then we'd have two wings instead of one, 2x48, with 96 modern fighters we'd be set for 20 years also there was money for it however none of the politicians was willing to take responsibility for such a huge purchase so it ended with a single wing of 48.

Pibwl:

Compared to Germany or US? Yes, compared to any post soviet republic however its a giant.
Pibwl:

Nope i meant WZT-3 purchase.
Pibwl:

And that little fraction was still a large order in itself so your point is?

Pibwl:
Naturally, if you refer to avionics and radar, not to the airframe itself...

Which is what matters since the airframe did not change for 30 years bar stealth machines so basically its still a XXI cent fighter jet able to fight on equal footing with any machine except the most advanced american air superiority fighters.

Pibwl:

Last i checked we've got 8 and 6 more rolling down in the first quarter of 2010 for a total of 48 till 2012 so whats the point of your baiting?

Pibwl:
It could: Gripen. While it's at least equally good, it's cheaper, especially in service.

But its not as good, in fact its not nearly as good in air superiority role and has less of a modernisation potential given that we knew we'd buy less then 100 fighters quality machines were sought after more then economic class fighter like the Grippen, the only reason why Czechs bought it was because they have much less money to burn then Poland.

by comparison Poland recently had deals with Malaysia, India, Peru and Iraq.

Don't forget the millions of dollars worth of equipment that Poland sold to the military regime in Burma.

Ofc it is, they have one milion soldiers ffs, numbers dont always decide who's stronger but if you have 10 times the size of an army they do, even with the horrible quality of their military thats still a million men.

The amount of soldiers now is not as important as earlier... The most important is connection ( contact), mobility , and ofc. technology.

The amount of reserves is, in any theoretical conflict Russia would attrition the living sh*t out of Poland in 2-3 months, we dont have enough hardware, Russians do.

Are you people insane! The Polish army probably has more experience than any other force in Europe (experience in Iraq and Afgan) Their air force equipt with the best US fighter planes. Their pilots the best in Europe (they always have been).

Who the hell comes up with this crap? Secondly, if it came down to raw guts and fighting sperite, the Pols could probably kick the snot out of anybody in Europe.

Actually we have been in Moscow already and we didn't need tanks. After the death of Ivan IV Poles went to Moscow and said that they have found the lost son of Ivan. And ... they believed us (!). So some Polish yokel really has been the tzar of Russia for a few weeks. Now one of the most important day in Russia is the day of expel Poles from Moscow :))

Neee, such values as morality and humanism are priceless.. They can't be replaced by violence and power.. It's better to defend your country effectively than to attack, even with preemptive intentions... I love Poles for morality in international relations... But being moral cannot signify a weakness.. Witkacy used to say that only strong people can be really moral...

So, which of those would be the equivalent to the Iron Cross? The Virtuti Militari? Or the Cross of Merit for Bravery?

Nope, Virtuti Military is roughly equivalent to Victorias Cross or Medal of Honor, the highest medal awarded.

The full name is Krzyż Kawalerski Orderu Krzyża Wojskowego or The Noble Cross of the Coat of Arms of the Army Cross (yeah its a mouthfull) there's several others with spellable names too but i dont remember those.

I think for Germans that's the Iron Cross.

Do they still award that BB?

I would guess then it's the "Cross of Merit for Bravery"! As it also cumulates to "Gold Cross of Merit with Swords" like the Kings Cross with Diamonds and Swords of old...

Trevek:

Again, yes...since 2008

It IS the Iron Cross...just looks abit adapted...read the link.
...
Since German armed forces began seeing active service again, first in Kosovo and then in Afghanistan, there has been a campaign to revive the Iron Cross and other military medals, since Germany currently has no awards specifically for active military service.
In 2007, a petition to the German parliament to revive the Iron Cross decoration received over 5,000 signatures.
In October 2008, the German defence minister instead created a new grade of the Ehrenzeichen der Bundeswehr, the Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr für Tapferkeit (Honor Cross of the Bundeswehr for Bravery), with an Iron Cross design.

Iron Crosses are only for war times, hence every one looks abit different. But it is also the symbol of the Bundeswehr.
