I need input for all in this group,

1. Do you think Komorowski is the best man for this job? If yes, why, and if not why?

2. Do you think someone other than he, could have done a better job? If you do, who, and why?

3. Did you work to get the best peroson in office? If yes, what did you do?

4. If you don't care for the leadership of Komorowski, what is it that you don't like?

5. Do you think, he, Komorowski, care's for the people of Poland, and has plans to make Poland a still better place? If not, why?

I myself, think he is the best man for this job, and does care, for Poland and her great people.

Sikorski would have been better in my opinion (he speaks English and is probably the most powerful man in Poland, what with his connections through Oxford) - but Komoroski isn't a bad choice. He's got the credentials (Solidarity activist, imprisoned for it, long career in the Sejm, previously the Marshal of the Sejm) to be President and his wife is doing an absolutely terrific job as First Lady - and he's respecting the Constitution by solving problems that can't be solved by the Government.

In general, he's dignified. He's bringing respect to the Presidency again - which after the disaster of the Walesa Presidency in some respects, Kwasniewski's drunkeness and Kaczynski's ineptness - was sorely needed. In fact, he seems to be the first President since Jaruzelski to remain dignified.

Answered above - Sikorski is more influential, and would have created a better image for Poland on the world stage due to speaking English fluently - however - he was soundly defeated in the primary election.

Anyone who got locked up for a significant period of time certainly cares.

He is doing what's best for Poland - his vetoing of the GMO bill due to it being rubbish was an excellent example. He's not a rubber stamp President, but he's also willing to make decisions in the best interest of the country. Inviting General Jaruzelski to be part of a military advice committee was a great move - the man is fluent in Russian and knows the Russian psyche perhaps better than anyone else alive in Poland. It didn't win him support - but it was the right thing to do from a defence perspective.

Yes. he hasn't put a foot wrong, unlike all three of his predecessors. He has brought much needed dignity to the office of President - a quality his immediate predecessor entirely lacked.
valpomike:
2. Do you think someone other than he, could have done a better job? If you do, who, and why?

Sikorski maybe, see above. Marek Borowski would also have done the job well.
valpomike:
3. Did you work to get the best peroson in office? If yes, what did you do?

Nobody worked to get him in office - he took over automatically on the death of his little-missed predecessor and was re-elected because he discharged his duties during the interregnum with dignity.
valpomike:
4. If you don't care for the leadership of Komorowski, what is it that you don't like?

Nothing. He has a largely symbolic role which he fulfills well.
valpomike:
5. Do you think, he, Komorowski, care's for the people of Poland, and has plans to make Poland a still better place? If not, why?

Yes he cares. As President of Poland however, he SHOULD NOT have any plans to make Poland a better place. Under the Polish constitution that is not his role. It is a matter for Prime Minister who is head of government. Something his predecessor didn't understand.
valpomike:

I agree.

Ok, on the rule there are no silly questions if you get a straight answer, President of Poland = our old Queen? (over simplified of course)but with the good grace to step down after a few years, yes?

Regarding the not speaking English well thing.......Gorbachov always had that baldy bloke with him as his voice,he didnt seem to loose any influence over it .( I know having the entire Red Army stood figurativly behind him probably helped a bit,but....)

Indeed... You would be amazed how often we run into people that we know from somewhere else... Apparently, everyone is coming here these days...

It feels like the crossroads of the world sometimes - I was in Villaggio Mall the other day and bumped into an old schoolfriend I hadn't seen for 30 years! She was here for a few days and I'm off soon back to PL for a month, then to either Mexico or Iraq so it was pure chance - or fate.

Out of interest, do you know why Pani Komorowska's here?

No idea. Government has too much money and it is burning a hole in their pocket and they need to spend it? Or maybe it is intended to strenghten the feeling among the Polonia in Qatar towards Komorowski? Who knows...

Are you going too?

Yes. Just sewing a button on my best shirt. At least she's travelling and making visits etc - if it forges some links for Polish companies that can only be good.

Really ? So please tell me how in the "real world" average Poles would react If they heard that Komorowski "has brought much needed dignity to the office of President". Dude is damn clownn and you know it very well.

Apparently she's here on an official visit:
Dignitaries to attend Shafallah Forum
First ladies of Sri Lanka, Namibia, Poland, Macedonia, Kenya and Ghana are among the dignitaries expected to attend the Fifth International Shafallah Forum, being held from January 22 to 24.
The event is being organised by the Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs under the patronage of HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
The hosts are Shafallah chairman Hassan Ali Bin Ali and Cherie Blair (founder, Cherie Blair Foundation).

Bestt possible?

No.

Best of those who actually ran for the office? Sadly, yes.

He's not a great statesman and is kind of gaffe prone but all things considered he's not doing a bad job. Not a great job but he's not actively making things worse AFAICT and that counts for something.

Where do we start? Turning up uninvited at international negotiations, swearing at homeless people on camera, refusing to sign off professorial appointments, refusing to sign off legislation. And that's just for starters.

I'll post one when I get back from work, but it was indeed a glitzy evening. Only a few people there so the First Lady wasn't spread too thinly, lovely buffet etc. And not one but two regular PF posters there.

That would be interesting if it were true. But it isn't. The guy hasn't put a foot wrong.

Yes, First Lady. Funny that in PL politicians' wives are never really liked. The wife of the duck was described by 'Father' Rydzyk (one of his political allies!!) as a witch who should euthanise herself, Sikorski's wife, a distinguished historian, attracts unjustified media ire and I've never really heard much good about any of the others except for Super Ekspres saying that Jolanta Kwasniewska dresses well. Pani Komorowska who has a doctorate in Polish Philology does however come across as someone genuinely decent and capable. Her participation in the forum in Doha shows she is doing her bit for humanity.

This trait of the electorate isn't confined to Poland. The wife of a politician is an easy target of ire, and she's often painted as power-hungry, conniving, and all-together undeserving of her "position".

Which has always been the way to the Polish public's heart. Doing something (no matter how necessary some segment of the population regards it) will just **** off the rest of the population. Don't blame him for the realities of Polish public opinion.

And don't forget - people were sick of Kaczynski "doing things".

Komorowski was elected to be stable, predictable and most importantly, not to interfere in the work of the Sejm/Government unless there was a very good reason to.
